A $79 Million Apartment Complex Initiative Progresses in Chattanooga’s Westside

A newly proposed $79 million apartment complex, comprising 230 units, has advanced in downtown Chattanooga’s Westside. This project signifies a critical initial stride towards an extensive rejuvenation of this area of the city. The complex, located at 501 W. 12th St., is expected to replace some public housing for College Hill Courts’ dwellers, and will offer low-income to moderate-income and market-rate apartments.

Preliminary Approval Issued

An assembly of Chattanooga panel gave the project an initial approval, allowing issuing up to $35 million of multifamily housing revenue bonds. Betsy McCright, Chattanooga Housing Authority’s executive director, labeled the city’s Health, Educational, and Housing Facility Board approval as being “monumental”. She believes this project will generate further enthusiasm as the units begin to materialize on site.

First Phase of a Larger Master Plan

The proposed apartments embody the initial phase of an extensive master plan developed by the housing authority, the city, and Westside residents, according to Jim Grauley, a representative from Atlanta-based developer Columbia Residential. The ultimate goal of this plan is to construct 1,600 to 1,700 residential units in the neighborhood, a venture that will result in the demolition of the current housing units at the College Hill Courts that
