Charles H. Coolidge National Medal of Honor Heritage Center
Today, we turn our attention to the honorable commemorations taking place in Chattanooga. The city that has the distinction of presenting the first Medal of Honor back on March 25, 1863, during the Civil War, now hosts the Charles H. Coolidge National Medal of Honor Heritage Center. Next Monday, the city will mark National Medal of Honor Day, a day set aside to recognize the nation’s highest military award for valor.
Medal of Honor Week Begins
This Saturday at the Heritage Center, the quarterly Bricks of Valor ceremony will be held, where the latest commemorative bricks for the plaza will be dedicated. This ceremony marks the beginning of a series of events as part of the Medal of Honor Week in Chattanooga.
Maranda Wilkinson, the Center’s director of education and public programming, will lead the event. Scott Saunders, who provides historical interpretation at the center, will also be present at the ceremony.
A Salute to Capt. Larry Taylor
A special commemoration will be held for Capt. Larry Taylor, who was awarded the Medal of Honor in September 2023 and passed away in January 2024. This Medal of Honor, now prominently displayed at the Charles H. Coolidge National Medal of Honor Heritage Center, symbolizes the highest form of bravery and commitment to duty.
Visitors to the Charles H. Coolidge National Medal of Honor Heritage Center will have the opportunity to reflect upon Capt. Taylor’s courage and contribution, along with the stories of countless other valorous individuals whose selflessness has shaped the fabric of the nation.
