Celebratory Ribbon Cutting Ceremony to Mark the Inauguration
A Juneteenth Celebration
On Saturday, the Alton Park Development Corporation is set to host its inaugural Juneteenth celebration and ribbon cutting ceremony for the grand opening of the African American Education and Heritage Museum. Scheduled from 10 a.m to 3 p.m., the grand opening event will take place at the Chattanooga Civic Center at Mountainside, located at 701 Hooker Road.
The ribbon cutting ceremony will commence at 10 a.m. This will be followed by presentations from the esteemed Howard Hustling Tigers Marching Band and Dance Team and a solo performance from the world-renowned African drummer Mawre Kofi from Ghana West Africa.
Museum Tour
Following the presentations, the first phase of the museum will open its doors for tours. From 10:45 to 11:45 a.m., dignitaries will be given the opportunity to explore the newly inaugurated museum. The public will be immersed in the experience from 1 to 3 p.m.
Community Engagement
Live entertainment will unfold on the APDC ballfield and park located at 701 Hooker Road. Visitors will have the chance to enroll in African history educational courses on-site, led by instructor Harold Bryson, M.ED, who has over five decades of experience teaching African history.
On top of that, attendees will be able to participate in African drum and dance classes taught by Kofi. The event also includes a petting zoo and pony rides by Noah’s Little Ark, as well as face painting exercises for children.
Food and Entertainment
The event will host an array of activities, including food stalls and live music by WPTP 100.1 FM Radio DJ Robin Rhodes and Michael Sliman. People are encouraged to bring tents, blankets, chairs and the family to fully enjoy this fun-filled day.
