Stolen Car Chase in Chattanooga Lands Four Teens in Custody
An Early Morning Arrest
Four teenagers were apprehended in Chattanooga, Tennessee after leading authorities on a high-speed car chase in the early hours of Wednesday. The group, aged between 13 and 16 years old, were reportedly in a blue Hyundai Elantra when the pre-dawn pursuit commenced.
According to the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO), officials had been instructed to be on alert for a damaged Elantra that had fled the scene of an alleged altercation at a local gas station on Shallowford Road and managed to elude authorities through the Hixson area and into downtown earlier on Tuesday night.
The Car Chase and Subsequent Apprehensions
An official statement from the HCSO mentions that the vehicle carried multiple occupants. The chase initiated when the vehicle was spotted maneuvering from Glass Street onto North Chamberlain Road. As it began to ignore traffic lights, a pursuit ensued. The chase progressed onto Wilcox Boulevard and Riverside Drive eventually ending at the intersection of Riverfront Parkway and Windtower Drive.
The car, already damaged at the rear, came to an abrupt halt after failing to navigate several curbs, causing additional significant damage to its tires. As the vehicle came to a standstill, all four occupants attempted to escape, but were swiftly taken into custody by the combined forces of the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office deputies and Chattanooga Police officers.
Further Investigation
Further investigation revealed that the driver of the Elantra was a 16-year-old boy. It was also discovered that a 15-year-old girl, who was listed as a missing person from Chattanooga with active juvenile attachments, was among the passengers. The two other passengers were aged 13 and 16.
The unified efforts of the HCSO and Chattanooga Police led to finding that this vehicle was not the same stolen Elantra that authorities had previously been warned about. However, the vehicle’s ignition system had been tampered with, and a USB cord had been used as a makeshift means of operation. Police records confirmed that the vehicle had been reported stolen from a Chattanooga apartment complex two weeks prior.
