Local Organizations Host Red Sand Project in Chattanooga
Chattanooga, Tenn. – Organizations from across Tennessee gathered on Thursday to raise awareness for human trafficking through the powerful Red Sand Project.

Sarah McKinnis, CEO of Willowbend Farms, explained, “We partnered with the Tennessee Department of Health to bring attention to human trafficking across the entire state of Tennessee. Locally, we joined forces with the Hamilton County Health Department and the Chattanooga Health Department to make an impact here in Chattanooga.”
A Symbol of Unity and Awareness
The Hamilton County Health Department, Willowbend Farms, and Vision Hospitality Group have spearheaded the Red Sand Project in Chattanooga for more than three years. McKinnis regards the project as a crucial step in ending modern-day slavery and exploitation. “Our goal is to wake up the community to what is happening and to open up possibilities for survivors. It’s essential for businesses, leaders, and survivors to come together to drive this work forward,” she said.
The Power of Symbolism
As part of the event, attendees were given red sand, which they poured into the cracks of sidewalks. This act symbolizes victims of human trafficking who have fallen through the cracks of society. Inza Haginas-Dyer from Love’s Arm Outreach highlighted the significance of the project in Chattanooga. “Yesterday was the world celebration for survivors of trafficking, and this event brings the message home to our community. It shows that we see, hear, and care about them.”
Commitment from the Hospitality Industry
Janelle Hawkins from Vision Hospitality Group emphasized the industry’s dedication to fighting human trafficking. “The hotel industry is making a significant commitment. We’re focusing on training, not just our staff but also survivors, providing them with gainful employment and financial freedom,” Hawkins stated.
According to the TBI, human trafficking is one of the fastest-growing crimes in the country. Events like the Red Sand Project play a crucial role in raising awareness and supporting local survivors.
