Chattanooga Bids Farewell to Local Pillar of Strength

Chattanooga is in mourning today as the community remembers the wonderful life of Janet Griffin Tuller, who passed away peacefully on September 10, 2024. Surrounded by her loving family during her final moments, Janet’s journey on this earth has come to a close, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and resilience that will never be forgotten.

A Life Well-Lived

Born on January 7, 1943, in Charleston, South Carolina, Janet lived a life filled with purpose and meaning. After completing her nursing education at the esteemed St. Mary’s School for Nursing, she graduated cum laude, demonstrating her dedication to her profession right from the start. Education was a cornerstone of her life, as she pursued further learning and even attained her master’s degree from the University of Tennessee Knoxville. Notably, she accomplished all of this while raising three young children and working full time—a testament to her fierce determination and passion for nursing.

A Family Woman

Janet’s love for her family was immeasurable. She is survived by her three children—Mike (Angela), Laura (Michael) Benton, and Jeanne (Daniel) Hixon—as well as her brother, David (Karen) Griffin. Janet’s grandchildren, Ross, Ryan, Daniel, and Ellie, brought her immense joy and laughter, and she was the kind of grandmother who made every moment special. Known for her infectious sense of humor and zest for life, Janet was not just an ordinary grandmother; she was a true source of inspiration and warmth for her grandchildren.

A Brave Battle

In 2018, Janet faced her most challenging battle when she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. However, she remained steadfast and determined, making choices about her health journey that reflected her strong will. With the desire to be closer to her family, she relocated to Chattanooga, where she could receive the love and support she needed. Her children are forever grateful for the beautiful gift of clarity she provided them during this time, ensuring that her wishes were known and understood.

Expressions of Gratitude

The family expresses their heartfelt thanks to the incredible staff at Morning Pointe Senior Living, the Lantern, and Hearth Hospice for their compassionate care during Janet’s final journey home. Their support has meant the world to the family, helping to ease the transition during such a difficult time.

Remembering Janet

The family plans to hold a private gathering that includes both a mass and a meal to reflect on joyful memories and create new ones in Janet’s honor. They want to extend their appreciation for all the love and support they have received during this time. Those who wish to share memories, thoughts, or photos are encouraged to reach out via the family’s email. Furthermore, condolences can be shared online as the community comes together to remember a truly remarkable woman.

A Community in Mourning

Alongside Janet’s passing, Chattanooga also bids farewell to others, including Robert Browdy, who passed away the day before, and Samuel Jefferson Skipper, Jr. and Ruth Crichton Hodges on the same day as Janet. Each life touched their loved ones and the community in unique ways. As a tight-knit community, the city of Chattanooga stands together, offering comfort and support during these times of loss.

That’s the beauty of life—it’s about the connections we make, the love we share, and the memories we create together. Janet Griffin Tuller has left an indelible mark on the hearts of many, and her spirit will continue to inspire those who knew her.
