Chattanooga Mourns the Loss of Kelvin Jimel Griffin
Chattanooga, Tennessee, is coming together to honor the life of Kelvin Jimel Griffin, a beloved member of the community who passed away on Wednesday, September 18, 2024, at a local hospital. Known for his warmth and dedication to family and friends, Kelvin was only 39 years old and leaves behind a legacy that touched many lives.
A Musical Journey
Kelvin grew up in Chattanooga and graduated from Brainerd High School, class of 2003. During his high school years, he was a proud member of the school’s marching band where he played the symphonic cymbals. His passion for music didn’t stop there; he continued to play in the marching band at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. His love of rhythm and community shone brightly through his musical pursuits.
Following his passion for learning and hands-on work, Kelvin attended Chattanooga State Vocational and earned his small engines ASE certification. This achievement showcased his commitment to not just music, but also technical skills, making him a well-rounded individual that many admired.
A Family Man
Kelvin’s devotion extended beyond his musical talents and education; he was a cherished husband and father. He is survived by his loving wife of eight years, Lucsendea Griffin, and their three children, including son Kaliv Jimel Griffin and daughters Miracle N. Herring and Kayla S. Griffin. His family, friends, and community were always a top priority in his life, reflecting the values he grew up with.
Kelvin was also very much involved with the New Emmanuel Baptist Church, where he found not only a spiritual home but also a supportive community that embraced him and his family. His absence will be deeply felt, as he always brought joy and laughter into the lives of those around him.
A Long List of Loved Ones
Kelvin is preceded in death by a number of family members, including his grandparents, Malvin and Cassie Griffin, and various aunts and uncles, who welcomed him into the afterlife. His family tree is a rich tapestry of relationships that included his father Calvin J. Griffin, mother Victoria Renea Griffin, and many siblings and relatives who will honor his memory.
Among those surviving are his brothers, Calvin M. Griffin and Marquis M. Griffin, along with his sister Quintana S. Penn-Bowling. He is also remembered lovingly by a multitude of aunts, uncles, cousins, and dear friends who felt the warmth of his companionship, including special friends like Gerald Richardson, Jr. and Christian Harrington.
Final Goodbyes
To allow the community to pay their respects, Kelvin will lie in state on Sunday, September 29, starting at 9 a.m. at Taylor Funeral Home. His funeral service is scheduled for 1 p.m. in the chapel, with Pastor Terrance Hannah serving as the eulogist. His final resting place will be at Highland Memorial Gardens on Monday, September 30, at 11 a.m. Everyone is welcome to come together to celebrate the life of this remarkable man.
