Chattanooga Kicks Off Fire Prevention Week with Emphasis on Smoke Alarms

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Fire Prevention Week is here, and the Chattanooga Fire Department (CFD) is taking a proactive approach to keep our community safe. This week-long event shines a spotlight on the importance of smoke alarms, which can be the difference between life and death during a fire emergency.

The Importance of Smoke Alarms

According to fire safety experts, many people either don’t have smoke alarms installed or aren’t familiar with proper smoke alarm maintenance. Allen Green, a Fire Life Safety Educator with the CFD, noted, “We are finding out that a lot of people do not have smoke alarms, or they do not know the education behind the smoke alarms.”

This lack of understanding can lead to devastating consequences. Poorly maintained alarms or their absence entirely can turn a house fire into a tragedy, resulting in injuries and even fatalities. The CFD is committed to changing this narrative, and they want to ensure that everyone knows how important it is to have a working smoke alarm.

What You Should Know

So what exactly should you know about smoke alarms? Here are a few key points:

  1. Testing Your Alarms: It’s critical to test your smoke alarms at least once a month to ensure they are in working order.
  2. Changing Batteries: Replace the batteries in your alarms at least once a year. Be sure to change the alarms themselves every ten years!
  3. Different Sounds: Familiarize yourself with the different sounds your smoke alarm makes: a chirping sound indicates low battery, while a consistent beeping means it’s time to replace the unit.

“This is why we push this message every year, really, in my position, I push it all year round,” added Green. Understanding these simple steps can significantly increase your safety at home.
