Community Concert Celebration

Chattanooga Welcomes the Ashton Family Chamber Ensemble

Hey, Chattanooga! If you’ve been on the lookout for some uplifting music to brighten your Sunday, mark your calendars for October 13. The Ashton Family, a talented chamber ensemble, will take stage at the First Cumberland Presbyterian Church, located at 1505 North Moore Road. The performance is set to begin at 3 p.m. and the best part? It’s absolutely free and open to everyone!

Meet the Maestro

Leading the ensemble is none other than Dr. J. Bruce Ashton. Dr. Ashton is not just your average musician; he has been a significant part of Chattanooga’s musical landscape for decades. He served as a professor of music at Southern Adventist University from 1968 to 2006 and currently holds the title of professor emeritus. A true music aficionado, Dr. Ashton is a composer, pianist, and violist, and he performs frequently. So, you can expect an afternoon filled with exquisite musical experiences!

Supporting Local Music

This delightful musical event is proudly sponsored by the Chattanooga Music Club, an organization that has been at the heart of promoting and supporting music in our beautiful city and the surrounding areas for more than a century. Founded back in 1896 by a small group of local musicians, the Chattanooga Music Club is officially recognized as the oldest music club in Tennessee, and it has played a pivotal role in elevating the fine arts within the community over the past 128 years.

Among their numerous accomplishments, one of the club’s most notable achievements is the establishment of a comprehensive scholarship program for aspiring musicians back in 1946. This program has provided financial assistance to about 200 students through competitive auditions. Many of these talented individuals have blossomed into professional musicians, teachers, orchestra directors, and much more, making their mark in the world of music.

Investing in the Future

This year alone, the Chattanooga Music Club has awarded over $10,000 in scholarships to high school seniors. That’s a fantastic way to help nurture the next generation of musicians! The club also made a lasting impact by purchasing and restoring the historic Austin Pipe Organ located in the Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Auditorium. This grand organ, which was originally installed in 1925, is a testament to the club’s commitment to preserving musical heritage for future generations.
