Chattanooga, Tenn. – It seems that parking in downtown Chattanooga is about to get a little costlier. In light of ongoing struggles with finding parking spots and adhering to city regulations, the city council has just approved the first reading of a new ordinance that will increase parking fines throughout the area. This decision comes after Mayor Tim Kelly highlighted parking problems during his recent State of the City address.
Why Are the Fines Increasing?
According to reports, the Chattanooga Area Regional Transportation Authority (CARTA) is spearheading this reform initiative. CARTA revealed that they issued over 5,500 parking tickets last year alone, which shows that many drivers might not be sticking to the rules. In an effort to promote better parking behaviors, illegal parking fines are set to jump from $35 to $45. Regular parking tickets will also see a notable increase from $11 to $20.

Meagen Sparks, who owns Chattanooga Carriage Company, operates right in front of the Tennessee Aquarium. She expressed her worries about the new fine structure, stating, “I really don’t think the increase will change anything. My customers already have such a hard time finding parking downtown.” Sparks is among the many local business owners who are concerned that tougher parking enforcement could deter potential customers from visiting their shops.

To streamline the parking process further, CARTA will also be rolling out a new app on December 1st. This app is expected to provide real-time updates on parking availability and pricing, which could make it easier for residents and visitors alike to navigate the downtown scene. Additionally, the already-existing Park Mobile app is a handy tool that users can utilize to manage their parking payments without hassle.
