Chattanooga Celebrates with Pride at the Annual Festival

Chattanooga, Tennessee, welcomed colorful displays of love and acceptance as the Chattanooga Pride Festival wrapped up its week-long celebration on October 6th. From rainbows to drag queens, the city was buzzing with an array of activities designed to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community and promote inclusivity.

A Week Packed with Events

Starting from September 29th and stretching through to the festival finale, Pride Week featured a delightful mix of events that catered to the interests of everyone. UTC students James Lawe, Ollie Holihan, and Fenn Alderman had their first taste of the festivities and were particularly thrilled by the lively live music performances. “We’re having a blast! This is such a fun environment, and everyone seems so friendly,” said Alderman.

The week kicked off on September 30th with “Practice with Pride,” a free yoga class at Renaissance Park, led by the experienced yoga teacher Jimmy Urciuoli. This was followed by enlightening events like “The Queer Chronicles: History Unfolded” at Barking Legs Theater, which highlighted crucial moments and figures in LGBTQ+ history.

Activities for Everyone

Every night had something unique to offer! Sleepyhead Coffee opened their doors for an open mic night that welcomed anyone ready to show their talent, while Mellow Mushroom hosted a fun Pride trivia night that brought out competitive spirits and laughter. For those looking for a more adult-oriented night out, the Pink Pony Club party at Common House Social Club was a hit among the younger crowd.

Thursday night was especially vibrant with the Rainbow Revue at the Westin hotel, a dazzling performance by a talented lineup of drag queens and artists, hosted by the fabulous Alyvia St. Claire and Stacie Rect. Attendees danced and cheered, fully immersed in the energy of the night.

The Grand Finale

The festival culminated in a spectacular parade at Ross’s Landing followed by a vibrant festival, where attendees of all ages came together to celebrate love and acceptance. Vendors such as California Burrito, Reignbow Baking Company, and Her Love Keeps Going filled the area with delectable food and unique products. “It’s amazing how many different vendors are here. It feels great to support local businesses that celebrate diversity,” noted Whittaker.

Community and Inclusivity

The Chattanooga Pride Festival is organized by Tennessee Valley Pride Inc., a non-profit organization that plays a crucial role in fostering diversity, raising awareness, and educating the community about LGBTQ+ issues. Haley Whittaker, a co-facilitator of UTC’s Feminist Action Movement, expressed her gratitude for the event, saying, “It’s pivotal for us to make everyone feel included. Events like this encourage conversations and break down barriers.”

With the close of this year’s festivities, many attendees are already looking forward to next year’s Pride celebrations. For those who are excited to get involved in organizing or supporting future events, Tennessee Valley Pride provides information on their website at chattanoogapride.com.
