East Ridge Bids Farewell to a Local Legend: William Douglas “Doug” Rosser
East Ridge, Tennessee, is gathering to celebrate the life of an outstanding community member, William Douglas “Doug” Rosser, who left this world on Thursday, October 10, 2024. Doug, born on July 16, 1941, in Cleveland, Tennessee, captivated the hearts of many throughout his remarkable 83 years of life. With a genuine smile and a big heart, he forged connections that will last a lifetime.
A Life of Service and Commitment
Doug was not only a devoted husband to his beloved Myra but also a dedicated father to Greg and Michelle. His journey began after he graduated from Central High School in 1960. He proudly served in the United States Air Force, stationed in various locations, including the Azores during the pivotal Bay of Pigs Invasion. Doug returned home to marry Myra, and together they built a loving family.
As a hardworking man, Doug didn’t just stop at military service. He poured his heart into numerous jobs, but his passion truly shone through in education. He dedicated 24 years as a welding instructor at East Ridge High School, where he inherited a special knack for positively impacting his students’ lives. With a belief in nurturing not only skills but also character, Doug inspired his students to become responsible citizens and to love one another.
A Grand Community Builder
Doug’s love for East Ridge High School extended way beyond his teaching role. He was deeply involved in coaching softball and football while also sharing his expertise by helping build the girls’ softball field. Not to forget, Doug famously served on the Chain Gang for ERHS football games for a remarkable 53 years, beginning in 1968. This commitment transformed into a family affair, where Doug mentored and recruited young men to join him throughout the years.
His dedication did not go unnoticed. Doug was honored with multiple accolades, including his well-deserved induction into the Southeastern Sports Hall of Fame. The high school even dedicated a yearbook to him and welcomed him into the ERHS Hall of Fame, showing the immense respect and admiration the community held for him.
A True Volunteer Fan
Calming yet undeniably passionate, Doug was an unwavering Tennessee Volunteers fan. His love for football was palpable; he held season tickets and never missed a game. Always the one to cheer for the underdog, he believed in making others feel valued and cherished. Doug was straightforward; he spoke his mind and wasn’t afraid to ruffle some feathers, all in good spirit.
A Lover of Nature
Outside of work and community involvement, you’d likely find Doug out on the lake. He was an enthusiastic fisherman, spending countless sunrises soaking in nature’s beauty while teaching others the art of fishing. He believed in the transcendent joy of fishing and often guided youth to stay on the right path, serving as a mentor in their lives.
Remembering Doug Rosser
Doug leaves behind a loving family: his wife Myra of 62 years, his son Greg (Susan), his daughter Michelle (Rusty), his cherished granddaughters Shannon, Erica, Amber, Cagney, and Maggie, as well as a host of great-grandchildren who filled his heart with joy. He is also survived by siblings Norma, Tommy (Debbie), and Tina, and numerous special nieces and nephews, including Jason (Tammy), who he loved dearly.
While he left this world, Doug Rosser’s legacy of love, kindness, and community service will forever echo in East Ridge. In lieu of flowers, his family kindly requests that donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or the East Ridge High School Alumni & Supporters Association to honor Doug’s passion for helping others.
Final Farewell
Visitors are invited to pay their respects during the visitation on Sunday, October 13, and Monday, October 14, from 4-8 p.m. Doug’s memorial service will occur on Tuesday, October 15, at 12 p.m. at the East Ridge High School football field. Following the service, he will be laid to rest at the Chattanooga National Cemetery.
In the spirit of Doug’s life and his love for the Volunteers, attendees are encouraged to wear their biggest orange to celebrate his legacy. As we come together to say our goodbyes, we remember a man who loved hard and lived fully. God Bless and Go Vols!
