Chattanooga’s Taco Journey: An Exploration of Super Carnicerias Loa

Hey there, Chattanooga! If you’re a taco lover like me, you’ve probably found yourself hunting for the best taco in town. This week, I’m diving into one of our local gems, Super Carnicerias Loa, and their delightful taquerias housed within four grocery stores across the city. Now, I know what you might be thinking—aren’t these just grocery stores? Well, yes and no. While they do carry all the essentials, they also host some amazing taqueria spots that you absolutely need to check out!

Meet Taqueria Mami Lupe!

If you swing by the Chickamauga Road location, you’ll find Taqueria Mami Lupe, named in honor of Stephanie Loa’s grandmother who had a significant impact on the family. “Mami Lupe raised my dad and his siblings, so it felt right to honor her,” said Stephanie. Each of their establishments carries a unique taqueria name, which is a lovely nod to family heritage. For instance, the downtown spot on Broad Street has Taqueria Mami Lupe #2, while the Hixson location boasts Taqueria Mami Mariana—another grandmother! And for those near Cleveland, check out El Piedrón, named after the family’s home island in Mexico.

A Flavorful Family Affair

So, what makes these taquerias stand out? According to Stephanie, it’s not just about honoring family; it’s also about variety. “Our kitchen staff hails from different regions in Mexico,” she explained. As a result, every taco is infused with individual flair and regional tastes. “You might have a taco Barbacoa from our Lee Highway store and one from Broad Street, and while they share ingredients, they will taste *distinctly* different.” I can vouch for that after trying the tacos myself—the flavors are nuanced and absolutely delightful!

Each taco is crafted with care, and you can *really* taste the love and tradition behind the recipes. You know, it’s like how one hundred grandmas could make chicken soup, and while there’d be similarities, each would have its own unique twist. That’s taco magic right there! No two tacos are ever exactly alike, even when they feature the same base ingredients.

Ordering Your Taco

When you visit one of these taquerias, you’ll find that ordering is a breeze. Each spot showcases a menu of delicious tacos, tortas, and gorditas. You simply order at the cashier, grab your receipt, and head to the kitchen counter where the magic happens. Here’s the best part: you get to customize your tacos! Add as much or as little cilantro, onions, and sauce from their vibrant condiment bar to make your meal exactly how you like it.

And let’s not overlook the drink options! Whether you’re craving a fizzy soda, refreshing agua fresca, or classic juices, they’ve got it all available right on the grocery shelves. This makes it easy to grab a drink while picking up some groceries.

A Meal to Remember

On my latest visit to the Hixson location, I couldn’t resist trying their enchiladas verde plate. It featured four chicken enchiladas smothered in spicy green sauce, topped with crunchy lettuce and luscious crema. Seriously, each bite was a delight! The salsa verde had just the right kick, and I appreciated the fluffy rice and beans served alongside.

Comfortable and Cozy

The dining areas are small but cozy, perfect for a quick lunch or a casual dinner. You’ll find loyal customers popping in frequently, especially during lunchtime when the aroma from the kitchen draws everyone in. And if you’re not in the mood to dine in, they offer take-out too—ideal for those busy weeknights!

It’s fantastic to have a Super Carnicerias Loa nearby whether I’m at home or work. I’ve yet to visit their Cleveland location, but it’s definitely on my bucket list!
