Signal Mountain, Tennessee – A beloved figure in the Signal Mountain community, Harold Anthony Marcum, fondly known as Tony or Hal, passed away peacefully at the age of 90, surrounded by his loving wife, Sue. His passing on November 1, 2024, comes just a day after Harold celebrated a remarkable milestone—his 90th birthday. The community is remembering him not just for his age but for a life rich in experiences, achievements, and the joy he brought to those around him.
A Life of Achievement
Born and raised in Knoxville, Harold’s life was one marked by dedication and purpose. He graduated from Bearden High School in 1952 before progressing to earn a B.S. in Business Administration from the University of Tennessee in 1962. Harold’s banking career kicked off shortly after graduation when he accepted a position at American National Bank in Chattanooga, and he never looked back. Over a 40-year journey in banking, he climbed the ranks to become the senior vice-president of loan review at SunTrust Bank.
His professional existence wasn’t solely confined to banking, as he also dedicated his time to education. Harold served as an instructor for the American Institute of Banking and held positions as director of the Robert Morris Associates’ Southern Chapter. His knowledge and expertise inspired countless young bankers in the region.
A Passionate Musician and Family Man
One of Harold’s enduring passions was music, particularly the guitar, which he played with skill and enthusiasm. A love for music ran in the family, as he shared this passion with his two sons, Ed and Derek, enriching their lives with melodies and rhythms that brought them closer together. Harold’s light-hearted spirit was evident in his fondness for crossword puzzles, and he never missed a chance to cheer on his beloved Tennessee Vols during football season. It’s not just sports where he shared his joy; Harold was also a dedicated fan of NASCAR races—never one to miss the roar of engines and thrill of the race!
Legacy and Survivors
Harold’s journey through life was not without its challenges. He faced numerous health challenges with remarkable bravery and dignity, showing those around him what resilience truly looks like. Though he has now departed, he leaves behind a cherished legacy. He is survived by his devoted wife of 44 years, Mary Sue Baker Marcum, and his two sons, Ed and Derek, both of whom continue to honor their father’s spirit.
In remembering Harold, his family invites those who knew him to celebrate his life at a special Celebration of Life ceremony, taking place at Lane Funeral Home on Ashland Terrace on Thursday, November 7, at 1:30 p.m. For those unable to attend, Harold’s ashes will be interred privately at Edgewood Cemetery in Knoxville at a later date.
