Chattanooga Gears Up for Timeless Theater Classic, “Bus Stop”
CHATTANOOGA, TN – Excitement is in the air as the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga welcomes audiences to experience the magic of theater with William Inge’s beloved play, “Bus Stop.” This charming production captures the hearts of many, exploring the day-to-day lives of bus passengers trapped by a snowstorm in a quaint diner. The UTC Theatre Co. is all set to bring this quintessentially American story to life on stage from November 19-23 at the Dorothy Hackett Ward Theatre within the Fine Arts Center.

About the Play
Written in 1955 and making its Broadway debut a year later, “Bus Stop” showcases Inge’s ability to blend humor and drama seamlessly. Set on a chilly Sunday morning in March in a small diner somewhere in Kansas, the play features eight unique characters, each embroiled in their own stories. As they huddle together, the themes of love, loneliness, and life-altering self-discovery come to light. It’s a sweet and thought-provoking reflection on what it is to be human.
Inge, who earned the title of “Playwright of the Midwest,” has a knack for writing about the lives of ordinary folks in a way that genuinely resonates. He gifted us not just “Bus Stop,” but also acclaimed works like “Picnic” and “Come Back, Little Sheba,” earning accolades that include a Pulitzer Prize and an Academy Award.
A Modern Twist on a Classic
“The mark of the 1950s is definitely in this play—everything from a telephone that’s mounted on the wall to the conventions of speech and the gender roles typical of the era,” shared Associate Professor Anne Swedberg, who is directing the production. While the story remains true to its time, the cast’s portrayal will weave modern nuances into the fabric of this captivating tale. “We’re doing it in 2024, and we’ve blended some of those crisscrosses to keep it relevant,” she added.
