HIXSON, TN – Big changes are on the horizon for Northgate Mall as demolition crews kick off the transformation of the long-standing Sears location to make way for a shiny new BJ’s Wholesale Club! Rodney Vass, an owner of the Colony 13 gift shop located at the Hixson mall, couldn’t contain his excitement. “A lady was in our store who lived in Connecticut where they had one,” he shared during a recent phone call. “She really liked it.” Vass is optimistic about this new addition and expects it to bring more shoppers through their doors.
What to Expect from BJ’s
According to Stacey Keating, vice president of corporate communications at the mall’s owner CBL Properties, the old Sears was one of the original anchors at Northgate. Although the demolition is in full swing, there’s no official timeline yet for when BJ’s will open. However, Bassam Issa, a local developer involved in the project, has indicated that BJ’s plans to take over the space in March.
So, what exactly will BJ’s offer? Preliminary city documents have hinted at a potential 99,000-square-foot store that could feature exciting extras, like a fuel station, tire sales, and a propane filling station! It’s the kind of one-stop-shop experience that could make shopping more convenient for many families in the area.
A Boost for Northgate Mall
The arrival of BJ’s comes at a crucial time for Northgate Mall, which has faced challenges with the closing of several anchor stores, including Sears, J.C. Penney, and Burlington. Issa believes that BJ’s will significantly enhance the mall’s appeal as a shopping destination. “This will give a boost to Northgate Mall,” he expressed hopefully, “and we’ve got plans for redeveloping other areas as well.”

What makes Hixson so special for BJ’s? According to Issa, it’s all about location! With Sam’s and Costco on the opposite side of the Tennessee River, BJ’s is poised to attract shoppers not just from Hixson but also from as far as Soddy-Daisy and downtown Chattanooga.
