MoonPies are well-known for their delectability. You already know how well marshmallow, graham, and chocolate go together. Do you have any idea how they came to be? It’s an out-of-this-world story, so grab a MoonPie and settle in while we tell you about it.
It all started in 1917, when a Kentucky coal miner requested a snack “as big as the moon” from our traveling salesperson. Earl Mitchell reported back, and the bakery responded with MoonPie, a delectable dessert. It was filling, fit in the lunch pail, and was a hit with the coal workers. As they say, the rest is history.
A Star is Created.
Chattanooga Bakery made over 100 different things, but they realized MoonPie was different. MoonPies were an inexpensive, satisfying dessert that flew off the shelves at $5 apiece. By 1929, the factory ladies pictured here were packing hundreds of boxes each day.
From Chattanooga to the Rest of the World
MoonPie accompanied our courageous servicemen to the battlefield. Nothing says “home” like a care gift stuffed with their favorite food from back home. MoonPie was the nation’s comfort meal throughout the heroic days of World War II, from the frontlines to the home front.
Following the war, America enjoyed extraordinary expansion. MoonPie felt the same way. MoonPie fits the bill for parents looking for a substantial and healthy snack to offer their children. Many of these Baby Boomers are still reminiscing about their childhoods while enjoying a childhood favorite.
It’s more popular than ever before.
The 1960s and 1970s were a time when people were willing to try new things. MoonPie was delighted to join in. The Double-Decker Deluxe was released, as well as new flavors such as Vanilla and Banana. More individuals than ever before were reaching for a MoonPie, regardless of size or flavor choice.
Things become more similar the more they change. People still adore MoonPies as much as they always have. With the Mini version and new flavors to pick from, perhaps even more. It’s a family custom that has been passed down through the generations. That’s something we’re quite grateful for. We presently manufacture roughly a million per day, so get yours soon, take a minute to relax, and enjoy.
