Chattanooga Embraces Community Connections Through Cast Iron Storytelling Initiative

Chattanooga’s Homegrown Storytelling Takes Center Stage

Attention all lovers of storytelling! Chattanooga is bustling with a delightful new initiative known as Cast Iron Storytelling, thanks to the creative minds of Jason Tinney and Holly Morse-Ellington from Next Exit Productions. If you thought storytelling was just for kids or found only in dusty old books, think again! This movement is all about giving a voice to the everyday heroes—your neighbors, friends, and even the folks you pass by on the sidewalk each day.

What’s the Buzz About Cast Iron Storytelling?

So, what exactly is Cast Iron Storytelling? Launched in April 2024, this project has brought together a wonderful mélange of local residents eager to share their unique experiences. With three successful main stage events already under their belt and another one set to happen before the year wraps up, it’s clear that this is not just a passing fad—it’s gaining momentum! I had the chance to sit down with Jason Tinney to dive deeper into this intriguing endeavor.

Meet Jason Tinney

Jason describes himself in a playful tone, “I’m a writer, actor/director, occasional musician, and the founder of Cast Iron Storytelling.” You can tell by his enthusiasm that he’s not just any ordinary storyteller—his passion for the art is infectious. And speaking of the name, it’s a nod from Holly Morse-Ellington, who suggested it based on the idea of cast iron being a staple of Southern tradition, echoing the stories passed down through generations.

Jason elaborates, “Cast iron has history, and it’s an iconic tool with recipes that have a lineage. Just like those stories, we take raw materials—real-life experiences—and cook them up into something amazing!”

How It All Began

The genesis of Cast Iron Storytelling traces back to a chance meeting during the pandemic. Jason recalls meeting Amy Petulla, the owner of Chattanooga Ghost Tours, during a radio show. After auditioning for a storytelling role, he dove into the world of “streetcorner storytelling”, where personal experiences and humor started to blend seamlessly. “I saw the power of storytelling as an art form,” Jason shared, “and I wanted to create something that opened the doors for others to share that experience too.”

Join the Storytelling Community!

You might be wondering, “Can I join in on the fun?” The answer is a resounding yes! Jason encourages anyone interested to join workshops designed to help coax out your inner storyteller. “I truly believe that everybody has a story to tell,” he says, emphasizing that his mission is to help people find that voice.

Who’s Listening?

Who exactly is the target audience for Cast Iron Storytelling? Jason beams, “Our audience is anyone who loves a good story! We aim for a casual atmosphere, a bit like a blue jeans party—comfortable, inviting, and full of friendly vibes. Think summer evenings on the porch with neighbors.”

Upcoming Events You Can’t Miss!

Mark your calendars for the next big event happening on December 1st at Barking Legs Theater! This holiday-themed event promises to be one for the books, closing out the 2024 season with a special evening.
