Celebrating a Life Well-Lived: Remembering Larry McConnell
Chattanooga, TN – The community of Chattanooga is coming together to celebrate the life of William Lawrence “Larry” McConnell, who passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 10, 2024. Larry’s journey began in Chattanooga, where he was born, and continued as he grew up in the nearby town of Dalton. He was loved by many and will be deeply missed.
A Life of Passion and Dedication
Larry was not just a remarkable individual but also a dedicated professional. After graduating high school in 1963 from Dalton High School, he went off to stretch his academic wings at Mercer University, which is located in Macon, Georgia. He graduated in 1967 and began his career, which took off in Chattanooga. For 27 years, he called Provident Insurance Co. (now known as UNUM) his professional home, and later spent seven more years with Fortis Insurance Co. in Atlanta.
No matter where his career took him, Larry’s heart was always at home. He cherished every moment spent on Lookout Mountain, where he lived and formed many wonderful friendships with his neighbors. Larry had a green thumb; he loved gardening and took great pride in his yard. Family was also very important to him, particularly his relatives in Dalton, where he maintained deep connections.
A Family Man
Life had its ups and downs for Larry. He was predeceased by his loving parents, Ova and Clyde McConnell, as well as his sister Bettye Rollison and her husband Fred. But even through these challenges, Larry always found ways to stay connected. He is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Judy and Jim Jolly, along with numerous nieces and nephews who each hold a special place in his heart. Among them are Alice and Jim McPherson, David and Karen Jolly, Derek and Deana Jolly, and Fred and Margaret Rollison.
One friend who remained steadfast by Larry’s side was John Barnes, and it’s clear that the wonderful neighbors on Lookout Mountain added warmth and companionship to his life.
A Celebration of Life
The family has decided to celebrate Larry’s life with a heartfelt service. Friends and loved ones are invited to gather at the chapel of Love Funeral Home on Saturday, where memorial services will be held at noon. Prior to this, the family will welcome friends from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. It’s a perfect opportunity for those who loved Larry to share memories, stories, and the joy he brought to their lives.
Honoring Larry’s Memory
In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested making memorial contributions to two meaningful causes: the American Cancer Society chapter in Chattanooga or Dalton, or the Family Support Council, based in Dalton. These contributions can help others in need, just as Larry spent his life caring for those around him.
A Community Impact
The loss of Larry McConnell resonates beyond just his family and friends; it touches the entire Chattanooga community. His life’s work, friendships, and devotion to gardening speak volumes about the kind of person he was—one who appreciated the beauty in life and the connections forged with those around him. As the community gathers to celebrate Larry, it’s clear that he will not be forgotten anytime soon.
Remembering Larry brings to mind the importance of love, friendship, and creating beautiful memories. Here’s to Larry McConnell, a man who truly embraced life and shared his joy with everyone he met.
