Competing across multiple categories, the academy’s notable achievements include $160,000 in grants aimed at closing the achievement gap. Exciting recent events demonstrate the school’s dedication to student empowerment and preparation for future challenges.
Exciting news is buzzing through the halls of Chattanooga as the Chattanooga Girls Leadership Academy, affectionately known as CGLA, has been honored with a prestigious “IMPACT” award from the national nonprofit organization, Building Hope. This award highlights schools that showcase truly transformative educational practices, and CGLA has proven that it is leading the charge!
Being the first single-gender public school in Tennessee, CGLA stands out as a beacon for young women in grades 6 through 12. With over 300 students enrolled, the academy has seen a significant growth surge, expanding from just 170 students back in 2012! This growth is a testament to the school’s vibrant programs and its dedication to empowering young women.
CGLA didn’t just receive an IMPACT award for participation; it competed in four notable categories: Community Engagement, Educational Innovation, Student Empowerment, and the S. Joseph Bruno Model Charter Award. Out of a pool of talented schools from nine states, a total of twelve awards were presented on May 7 during a summit held in sunny Miami, marking a huge day for the recipients.
The award comes with a glorious recognition which includes $160,000 in grants to support the initiatives that have made a difference across diverse communities. At CGLA, the focus is on closing the achievement gap particularly for young girls of color by implementing specific programs aimed at their development and success.
One of the standout features of the school is its emphasis on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) and the arts. Students are not only trained in traditional subjects but are also encouraged to pursue careers in these essential fields. A perfect example of this inspiration in action is senior Amaya Dieng, who is passionately preparing to embark on a STEM career, thanks to CGLA’s focused programs and resources.
In addition to the recent award, CGLA has been recognized as a Tennessee Reward School and a TVAAS Level 5 School. These accolades are just part of the recognition. The academy also hosts delightful events, such as their annual Odyssey luncheon, where successful graduates return to speak and motivate current students.
The excitement doesn’t stop there! CGLA recently held a student-led debate, which allowed students to sharpen their speaking and analytical skills. Another thrilling event, a living wax museum, honored the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., allowing students to explore history in an interactive, engaging way.
The leadership at CGLA, spearheaded by Dr. Elaine Swafford, places a strong emphasis on preparation for standardized tests like the ACT, ensuring that students are ready for the challenges ahead. The school’s innovative practices and supportive environment are paving the way for a brighter future for all its participants.
As CGLA celebrates its remarkable journey and achievements, it continues to be a glowing example of what can happen when dedicated educators and enthusiastic students come together to achieve greatness. Here’s to many more celebrations in the future!
