Harbor City, California – On the crisp morning of November 29, 2024, the sun rose to a world that would never be quite the same without Charles Thomas Turner. The 86-year-old, a beloved figure originally from Chattanooga, Tennessee, passed away peacefully in his residence, leaving behind a legacy that many will remember fondly.
Born on October 17, 1938, to Harry and Mamie Turner in Chattanooga, Charles was a resident of Harbor City for nearly 55 years. His journey began at Howard High School, where he graduated in 1956. Driven by a sense of duty and adventure, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving an impressive eight years. His assignments took him across the globe – from the rugged beauty of Alaska to the hot deserts of Texas and even to the enchanting landscapes of Italy.
Upon completing his service, Charles made a pivotal move to California, where he quickly made his mark. His first job was with the TRW Corporation, playing an understated but significant role on the Apollo 11 Lunar Module team. Yes, you read that right! He helped contribute to a mission that put the first man on the moon!
Charles’s career was a tapestry of varied experiences. He transitioned to work at Hughes Communications before becoming a Communications Electrician for the City of Los Angeles. His knack for numbers led him to the L.A. Unified School District as an auditor, and later, he served as a field agent for the Internal Revenue Service. He capped off his career at the Department of Water and Power, where he shared his wealth of knowledge as an instructor and supervisor in the Information Technology Services Business Unit.
Charles was not one to rest on his laurels. His commitment to education never waned; he earned an Associate’s degree from Los Angeles City College, followed by two bachelor’s degrees in Business Administration from California State University, Long Beach. His passion for learning culminated in a Master’s degree in Vocational Education, and he even became a credentialed Community College Instructor at Pasadena City College.
Outside of his professional accomplishments, Charles had a zest for life. He loved to swim, walk, and attend jazz and blues concerts. A true sports enthusiast, he enjoyed playing tennis, basketball, and pool. But perhaps his greatest talent was listening to others; his friends and family often remarked on how he made time for everyone, lending an ear or a comforting word whenever needed.
Charles is survived by his loving wife, Curlean (Washington) Turner, and their three sons: James (Susan), Jeffrey, and Gregory (Melissa). He leaves behind a cherished circle of family including his brother Ruben (Bernadine), grandchildren like Jennifer and Jason, and two adorable great-grandchildren, Jemina and Jarrin. His legacy also includes many nieces and nephews, and a dear friend, Abraham Yates, whom he met during his military service.
The community is invited to join the Turner family for funeral services on Thursday, December 19, at 9 a.m. in the chapel of Taylor Funeral Home. Afterward, Charles will find his final resting place in Chattanooga National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Charles’s memory are encouraged to make a donation to the American Cancer Society – a cause that speaks volumes about the man he was.
As we reflect on Charles Thomas Turner’s incredible journey, we are reminded of a life marked by service, education, and an unwavering love for family. He will be dearly missed but fondly remembered.
