In the heart of Chattanooga, a bustling community thrives, and thanks to a dedicated group of volunteers known as Ambassadors, the bond between business and the local community grows stronger each year. For over three decades, these unsung heroes have been the friendly faces welcoming new businesses, shaking hands at events, and fostering relationships within the city. Today, we shine a spotlight on Vaughn Berger, a true champion in this role, who has just been named the 2024 Ambassador of the Year by the Chattanooga Area Chamber of Commerce.
Vaughn is an account executive with Reagan Outdoor Advertising, and his journey as a Chamber Ambassador has been nothing short of inspiring. “I love my role as a Chamber Ambassador,” Vaughn enthused, underscoring the passion he has for building strong community ties. With a career that has included stints as the business development director for Bryan College and vice president of Community National Bank, it’s clear that Vaughan embraces his responsibility to connect the dots between businesses and their communities.
Vaughn’s affiliation with the Chamber started nine years ago when Bryan College nudged him to network on their behalf. “I had done this before in other counties, so I knew this was how you meet people and get involved,” he explained, recognizing the importance of getting face time with potential partners. As he immersed himself in Chamber meetings and joined the Ambassadors, he saw firsthand just how vital this role could be. The connections he formed not only benefited others but also led to his current position at Reagan Outdoor, thanks to a fellow Ambassador’s referral.
Being an Ambassador is not just a title for Vaughn; it’s a commitment. “I work hard to make sure I represent the Chamber well to its member businesses,” he shared. His role allows him to reach out to business owners he wouldn’t normally connect with, deepening relationships and uncovering opportunities. From walking down streets he might otherwise overlook, to discovering businesses in need of promotion, being an Ambassador widens his professional horizons.
When asked what advice he would give to new businesses in Chattanooga, Vaughn’s response was straightforward: “Show up, volunteer, and do what you say you’re going to do.” His experiences highlight that the Chamber values its member businesses. “They work hard to champion local businesses and make life better for everyone in our region,” he affirmed, echoing the Chamber’s mission of fostering a thriving environment for entrepreneurship.
Vaughn believes that the Ambassador program doesn’t just serve businesses; it also fosters friendships. “I have made several lifelong friends through the Chamber Ambassador program,” he noted, highlighting the camaraderie that blossoms when like-minded individuals work towards common goals. One memorable instance occurred during an Ambassador visit to Pepsi, where a chance conversation led to a fruitful partnership. “It was simply good timing that led to sales,” Vaughn said, illustrating how spontaneous connections can ignite opportunities.
Why does he choose to dedicate his time and energy as an Ambassador? Vaughn appreciates that the Chamber is adaptable, responding to the evolving needs of the community. “Their Council system is very unique, especially compared to other cities where every township has its own Chamber that you have to pay to join,” he explained. By giving his time, he positions himself to gather leads that could turn into business opportunities—all while creating friendships that enhance both his work and personal life.
In lieu of the heartfelt efforts from dedicated individuals like Vaughn Berger, the Chattanooga Area Chamber of Commerce continues to thrive, creating a vibrant network of businesses and a supportive community that truly cares about each other. So, the next time you see an Ambassador engaging with local businesses, you’ll know they are more than just representatives; they are the glue holding the community together.
