Exciting news is brewing in Chattanooga as the city takes a significant step toward becoming North America’s first-ever National Park City! On December 17, 2024, Chattanooga officially submitted its final application to the National Park City Foundation, the organization that grants this prestigious designation. The team behind the application has poured their hearts into telling the city’s unique story, showcasing its stunning landscapes and vibrant community spirit.
So, what’s all the buzz about? Chattanooga’s application features a captivating digital portfolio known as the Journeybook. Crafted in collaboration with a local creative firm, Little Things Lab, this Journeybook is more than just a document; it’s an expansive, narrative-rich journey that captures the 10,000-year history of the region. “We wanted to break the mold,” says Brian Smith from Chattanooga Parks and Outdoors. “There’s no city on Earth like Chattanooga, so why not have a Journeybook as original as the place it celebrates?” Sounds pretty special, right?
Mayor Tim Kelly describes the Journeybook as a representation of how Chattanooga has become a ‘City-in-a-Park.’ It’s rich with stories of triumph against challenges, resilience, community spirit, and the beautiful lands surrounding us. From the beginnings of the very first inhabitants to modern innovations like the fastest internet in the country, the Journeybook has it all.
It also highlights iconic spots around the city, like the breathtaking Rock City, the historical Moccasin Bend, and the impressive Tennessee Aquarium, which boasts a variety of marine life. Not to mention the fascinating history of Coca-Cola’s first bottled drink being made right here!
But the Journeybook isn’t just about pretty pictures and fun facts; it’s a living testament to community effort. Local organizations and heroes, like the Chickamauga-Chattanooga National Military Park and the Barking Legs Theater, are woven throughout the pages, too. “Sharing our city’s story with the world was an honor,” says Teal Thibaud, founder of Little Things Lab, highlighting how this effort was crafted with care and creativity.
The online version of the Journeybook will be available for everyone to explore. And even better, it invites residents to contribute their stories and ideas, making this a community-driven project. Smith emphasizes, “It’s also an invitation. We welcome feedback and input.”
As if that wasn’t exciting enough, Chattanooga started this passionate journey back in early 2024. Thousands of citizens, leaders, and community champions joined forces, collecting over 5,500 signatures to support the initiative. With the application now submitted, a visiting delegation is set to tour the city this winter, and an announcement regarding their status could come as early as spring!
This initiative is shaping up to be not just about achieving a title but about transforming Chattanooga into a model of sustainability, community engagement, and environmental stewardship. “Documenting our efforts helps show that we are committed to a livable city for all,” Tricia King Mims, executive director of National Park Partners, shares eagerly. “We’re looking to not just reflect on our accomplishments but to continuously improve and learn from successful communities around the globe.”
The Journeybook exemplifies this drive, offering a beautiful and powerful tool to inspire locals and visitors alike to cherish and protect the natural treasures of Chattanooga. With each chapter reflecting core commitments to food, agriculture, outdoor recreation, and more, it’s clear that the journey toward becoming a National Park City is more than just a title; it’s a movement.
As Chattanooga sets its sights on the future, the sentiment among the community is clear: “The best is yet to come,” says Haley Richardson Treadway, emphasizing that for Chattanooga, every small step taken is paving the way for a sustainable paradise enjoyed by generations to come.
