Chattanooga, TN – The Lookout Valley High School band, often referred to as “Hand Me Down Hixson,” is celebrating a significant breakthrough in their quest for new uniforms. Thanks to the combined efforts of local supporters and a major donation from the Frost Family Foundation, the band program is set to receive a total of $30,000 to cover the cost of new uniforms and improvements for its instruments.
The Lookout Valley High School band, comprised of around 90 talented students, has been struggling with outdated uniforms and instruments for decades. Their band director, Shannon Stephens, has passionately advocated for the band, highlighting the need for improvement. The Frost Family Foundation, specifically Lisa Frost and her daughter Amy Haddock, played a crucial role in providing the necessary funds.
The band’s fundraising effort aimed to gather $27,000 to replace uniforms that were donated from Hixson High School several years ago. These hand-me-downs have contributed to the band being labeled “Hand Me Down Hixson,” a name that students find disheartening. Following media coverage of their situation, the band received an unexpected donation that surpassed their goal, allowing them to provide not only new uniforms but also new instruments.
The surprise donation took place in Lookout Valley High School’s band room during a special assembly. This emotional event was a clear sign of community support and interest in the students’ success.
The donation was made recently during a surprise assembly on Wednesday morning, amplifying excitement among the band members. The band director announced plans to order the new uniforms by the end of the year, with an anticipated debut at the Armed Forces Day parade in May 2025.
The Frost Family Foundation aims to uplift communities that often go unnoticed. Lisa Frost expressed a desire to support the talented students at Lookout Valley. The donation not only serves to provide new uniforms but also signifies that the band members are valued and that their efforts are deserving of acknowledgment.
Feedback from students like seventh grader Hunter Rountree reflects the joy and gratitude felt across the band. “This is so exciting, thank you to everyone who was a part of this process,” he exclaimed. The generosity of the Frost Family Foundation has not only met the practical needs of the band program but has also reinvigorated the students’ enthusiasm and pride in their identity as part of Lookout Valley High School.
With the funds secured, director Shannon Stephens expressed her commitment to using the donations responsibly. She emphasized the importance of music education and its impact on students. The new uniforms will allow students to take the stage with pride, shedding the old name and establishing an identity that reflects their own school—Lookout Valley.
This experience has shown the students that community members care about their growth and success, serving as inspiration for both their musical journey and their future endeavors. As they look forward to marching in fresh uniforms, the Lookout Valley band stands as a testament to the power of community support and determination.
