Chattanooga’s Newest Book Bar: The Reading Room
Chattanooga is brewing something special in the heart of the city—a unique haven where *books* and *beverages* collide! Meet The Reading Room, a cozy spot that promises to be as delightful as it sounds. With the launch of this exciting new business, folks can expect to dive into the *wonderful world of literature* while sipping on their favorite drinks. Who knew that a bookstore and a bar could have so much in common?
A Dream Come True for Linden Marno-Ferree
At the helm of this venture is Linden Marno-Ferree, a passionate bookseller turned bartender. Linden has a rich background in both the bookstore and restaurant industries. She spent time at the *renowned Harvard Bookstore* in Boston before hopping over to *Politics and Prose* in Washington D.C., where she rubbed elbows with *local celebrities* like *Michelle Obama* and *Bill Clinton*. However, despite her love for selling books, Linden realized that it wasn’t the best way to make a living. So, she switched gears and found her way into the restaurant scene, starting off as a host and swiftly working her way up to a lead bartender.
Yet, in the back of her mind, Linden always held on to her longstanding dream: to open a *book bar*. “I always thought the two were really compatible,” she shared. “You can dive into something, spend time with friends, be alone, invest yourself intellectually, escape the world, zone out. They’re both an oasis.” And isn’t that what we all crave sometimes—a little getaway?
Finding the Perfect Location
In 2018, Linden took a big leap towards making her dream a reality. She moved to *Chattanooga*, searching for a community that was “not too big but not too small,” with diversity and plenty of *outdoor adventures*. She found her answer in this charming city nestled between *mountains and rivers*.
But the journey didn’t stop there. A surprising partnership soon unfolded with the *Downtown Public Library*. Thanks to some friends at the library, Linden discovered the Library Foundation, which had a treasure trove of *donated and discarded books* that needed a new home. These books, which were initially sold at fundraisers, would now grace the shelves of The Reading Room.
Pop-Ups with Purpose
For months now, the library and Linden have been teaming up for a series of *pop-up events*, breathing new life into these forgotten books while raising funds for the library. Each pop-up has been a chance for the community to not only grab some amazing reads but also enjoy a lively atmosphere. As Linden prepares for a permanent location in *Old Town Brainerd* next year, the excitement in the air is palpable!
Opening Up an Oasis
The permanent spot is set to feature snug lounge seating, hip armchairs, and library-style tables, all under the glow of dim lights. Linden envisions a space filled with *rugs, trinkets,* and items that create a vibe that blends the charm of a “dingy bookstore” and the coolness of a “dive bar,” making for an experience unlike any other. “I want it to feel funky and weird like an artist’s living room,” she explained.
Join the Celebration!
Mark your calendars for the next exciting pop-up event on Friday, December 13th, at the historic *St. Elmo Fire Hall* (4501 St Elmo Ave). Doors will swing open at *7 PM* and live music from *Dalton Mills* and *The New Quintet* will kick off at *8 PM*. A $15 cover charge will go directly to the talented musicians, and it promises to be an evening full of fun, books, and tunes!
