On a serene Saturday, November 9, 2024, the vibrant tapestry of life in Chattanooga lost a beloved gem. Chang Sun (Hyon) Sanford, aged 72, passed away peacefully in her home, surrounded by her cherished family. Born in the bustling city of Seoul, South Korea, Chang was more than just a hairstylist; she was a beacon of strength, love, and devotion to all who were fortunate to know her.
Chang lived and breathed her passion for hair. As a successful hairstylist, she owned and operated several thriving salons throughout her remarkable career. Her clients didn’t just see her as a stylist – they considered her a confidante and a friend. Chang had a remarkable ability to connect with people, ensuring they looked fabulous and walked out feeling renewed and confident. Her clients will always remember the warmth of her smile and the magic in her scissors.
Beyond her professional achievements, Chang’s life was deeply rooted in her faith. A devoted Christian and an active member of the Evangelical Layman’s Church, she dedicated her time and energy to spreading the Gospel and sharing the love of Jesus Christ with everyone she met. Her deep faith guided her actions and influenced her to make a significant impact in her community. There’s no doubt that her legacy of kindness and compassion will continue to inspire those who were touched by her generosity.
Chang’s greatest joy was her family. She is survived by her loving husband, John Conrad Sanford, and their cherished son, Jonathan Sanford, both of whom reside in Chattanooga. John often remarked that Chang was not just his wife but his best friend and partner in all aspects of life. Together, they built a home filled with love, support, and laughter.
As their family prepares to celebrate her life, there will be no visitation or services at the funeral home. Instead, a special celebration of life will be held at their family home in Chattanooga, allowing friends and loved ones to share their own memories of this incredible woman at a later date.
The Sanford family has requested that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Evangelical Layman’s Church. This gesture reflects Chang’s love for her church community and her commitment to helping others. Friends and family are encouraged to visit www.chattanoogavalleyviewchapel.com to share their fond memories of Chang, a testament to the profound impact she had on countless lives.
In addition to Chang, the community is mourning the loss of several other remarkable individuals. On the same day, Dr. Robert “Bob” Michael Cutrer (75) from Chattanooga also passed away. Born in New Jersey, Bob was a graduate of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, making significant contributions throughout his life.
A few days earlier, on November 6, Martha Jean Powell Coon, aged 89, passed away in Cohutta, Georgia, surrounded by her devoted family. Known as Marty, she was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who left behind lasting memories.
Also, the community feels the loss of Marlene Eberhart, age 87, from Red Bank, Tennessee, who passed away on November 8. A cherished member of the Red Bank Baptist Church and her Sunday School class, her influence touched many hearts with her faith and compassion.
As Chattanooga comes together to remember these incredible lives, it serves as a poignant reminder of the power of community, love, and faith in navigating the highs and lows of life. The legacies left behind by these remarkable individuals will undoubtedly continue to inspire everyone who knew them.
