News Summary

Chattanooga residents have until February 3 to register to vote in the crucial city elections on March 4. This election will determine the next mayor and city council members for the next four years. Options for registration include online, by mail, or at various public offices. Absentee ballots can be requested until February 22, and early voting runs from February 12 to 27. It’s vital for citizens to participate and influence the city’s future.

Chattanooga Gears Up for City Elections: Time’s Ticking to Register!

Exciting news for the residents of Chattanooga! If you want to make your voice heard in the upcoming city elections on March 4, you have until February 3 to register to vote. This election is particularly important, as it will decide who fills the roles of mayor and the members of the city council for the next four years. That’s right, the future of our city is in your hands!

How to Register

Getting registered is easier than you might think! You can sign up online at ovr.govote.tn.gov, swing by the Hamilton County Election Commission office, or even send in your registration through the mail. If you’re a first-time voter mailing in your application, remember to include a copy of your current photo ID that has your name on it. Options for acceptable photo IDs include things like state-issued IDs, federal IDs, and even handgun carry permits.

Now, if your ID is expired, don’t panic! You can still vote by providing an expired ID along with one of the following documents: utility bills, bank statements, government checks, or even paychecks. Just keep it handy, so you can prove your identity!

Where to Grab a Paper Form

Are you more of a paper-and-pen person? No problem! You can find paper voter registration forms at several locations including the Chattanooga Public Library, city hall, the Hamilton County Health Department, and the county clerk’s office. They’re also available at every post office in Hamilton County, so you’re never too far from signing up!

Online Registration Tips

If you decide to register online, keep in mind that you’ll need a Tennessee driver’s license or a Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security ID to complete your registration. Simple, right?

Registration Numbers are Down

However, there’s a bit of concern about registration numbers this year. So far, only 547 new registrations have come through for 2025. This is a noticeable drop from 755 registrations recorded by late January in 2021. Our Hamilton County Administrator of Elections, Scott Allen, notes that the previous excitement was due to a highly competitive field and no incumbent mayor to risk re-election. Things might feel a bit more calm right now, but every vote counts!

Absentee Ballots and When to Vote

If you can’t make it to the polls on March 4, don’t forget that you can request an absentee ballot until February 22. This gives you a little leeway if unexpected things pop up on election day. And for those of you looking to get a jump on voting, early voting will run from February 12 through February 27. You can cast your vote at three locations: the Election Commission office, the Chris L. Ramsey Community Center, and the Hixson Community Center. It’s all about making it convenient for you!

Who’s Running?

Now, let’s talk specifics about who’s on the ballot. Incumbent Mayor Tim Kelly is gearing up to face challenger Chris Long. On the city council side, Council Chair Chip Henderson has one opponent, James “Skip” Burnette, while three candidates, Raquetta Dotley, Jenny Hill, and Cody Harvey, are running unopposed. Then there’s Council Member Isiah Hester, who’s up against challengers Dennis Clark, Cory Hall, and Samantha Reid-Hawkins.

After the sad loss of council member Carol Berz, five candidates are vying for her seat, including Jenni Berz and Mark Holland. Additionally, Council Member Demetrus Coonrod has decided not to seek reelection, opening the door for Ron Elliott, Letechia Ellis, and Evelina Kertay to battle it out for her spot.

So as you can see, there’s a lot to think about as the elections approach. Make sure you’re registered and ready to cast your vote, because your opinion matters in shaping Chattanooga’s future!
