Chattanooga Bids Farewell to Beloved Community Figure Jack Payne

Chattanooga, TN – The city of Chattanooga is mourning the loss of a cherished community pillar, Joseph “Jack” William Payne, affectionately known as “Pop.” Jack, who was 96 years young, passed away peacefully on September 21, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. His passing has left a gentle void in the hearts of many, for Jack personified a life rich in love, friendship, and service.

A Lifelong Chattanooga Resident

Born on May 4, 1928, to the late Thurman W. and Celestine Payne, Jack was a true son of Chattanooga. He graduated from Notre Dame High School and later earned a History degree from the University of Chattanooga. While in college, he was proud to be a charter member of the Zeta Phi Chapter of the Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity.

Jack’s unwavering faith formed the bedrock of his character. He was a dedicated member and volunteer at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, where he served in numerous capacities including treasurer, lector, and committee member. He even coached the church’s ladies’ softball team!

From a Teller to Bank Manager

After college, Jack served in the Army in Korea from 1950 to 1952. Upon his return, he began his career as a teller at 11th Street Pioneer Bank. Little did anyone know, that as the years rolled on, Jack would grow to be a key figure in the local banking community, retiring as a manager and senior bank officer after nearly 40 years of dedicated service. His colleagues and clients fondly referred to him as the “Mayor of 11th Street.” Jack took great pride in helping countless people and local businesses secure their first loans, especially many Notre Dame grads.

A Man of Many Loves

Jack was not only dedicated to his career but also had a zest for life that was infectious. A highlight of his day was indulging in Mayfield vanilla ice cream drizzled with chocolate syrup every evening, a little treat he loved to share with family and friends. In his spare time, Jack enjoyed fishing, even if his catch was modest. He had a knack for spinning entertaining tales about his fishing expeditions that kept everyone laughing.

On the tennis courts, Jack shone as a spirited competitor, earning friendships and awards along the way. In his later years, you could find him gliding through the Belvoir neighborhood on his three-wheeled cycle, chiming his bell to greet neighbors with warmth and familiarity – a heartwarming scene that will surely be missed.

Family and Community Leader

Perhaps the most significant legacy Jack leaves behind is his unwavering commitment to family and faith. He and his beloved wife, Helen Mahoney, whom he married in 1954, embodied love in action. Together, they demonstrated what it meant to prioritize family, faith, and service, creating a home filled with kindness and laughter.

After Helen’s passing in 2013, the family knows Jack is now reunited with her, likely dancing the jitterbug together just as they did in their youth.

Jack is survived by six children, twelve grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, and countless friends grateful for the impact he had on their lives. He was also actively involved in organizations like the Serra Club, Knights of Columbus, and Civitan Club, always eager to lend a helping hand.

A Farewell to a Beloved Community Member

Jack Payne’s funeral mass will take place at 11 a.m. on Friday, September 27, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, with multiple priests officiating. The family invites friends to gather for visitation on Thursday evening prior to the mass, ensuring everyone has a chance to pay their respects.

As the Chattanooga community reflects on his remarkable life, it becomes clear that Jack Payne was more than just a banker; he was a true friend, mentor, and beacon of light who inspired others to serve and love fiercely. He will forever be remembered for the joy he brought into the lives of everyone he met.
