Chattanooga Bids Farewell to Beloved Community Figure
Chattanooga, TN – The air was thick with sorrow as residents came together to remember and celebrate the life of William “General” Allen Lee, a cherished figure in the community who passed away on October 16, 2024. He was 71 years old and left behind a legacy that will be hard to forget.
A Life Well-Lived
William was born in Chattanooga to the late Allen and Mary Ellen Lee and dedicated his life to serving others. He was a loving husband to Theresa Lee, his beloved wife of 34 years who predeceased him. In addition to his wife, he also mourned the loss of his best friend, Paul Austin Levi.
For over 37 years, General Lee was an electrician at Southern Railway, now a part of Norfolk Southern, where he was a proud member of the IBEW/LU311. His work ethic and technical skills were evident in everything he did, and he took great pride in his contributions to the field.
Community Engagement
General Lee was not just a dedicated worker but also a community-oriented individual. He served as a volunteer firefighter in East Ridge for over 20 years, always ready to lend a hand to those in need. His commitment to helping others extended beyond the fire service; he was actively involved in the Masonic Lodge #755 and the Alhambra Shrine, where he built lasting friendships and helped support various charitable causes.
Craftsmanship and Hobbies
Outside of his professional life, William was a talented leather craftsman and had a passion for fishing that filled many weekends with joy. Those who knew him can attest to his excitement when he spoke about his fishing trips, sharing tales of the big catches and the unexpected adventures along the way.
Family and Loved Ones Left Behind
The light of William’s life was undoubtedly his family. He is survived by his daughter, Paula (Frank) Lambert, and his cherished grandson, Gage (Isabelle) Haley, who brought him endless joy. He also leaves behind his niece, Carolena “Cara” Filyaw, along with numerous family members and friends whose lives he touched in meaningful ways.
Final Farewell
Community members and friends are invited to pay their respects for General Lee during a gathering that will take place from 5-9 p.m. on Thursday, October 24, at the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home. A funeral service will follow on Friday, October 25, at 11 a.m., with Pastor Tony Leonard officiating. Following the service, those gathered will head to Chattanooga Memorial Park for burial.
The family encourages memorial contributions to be made to the Chattanooga Firefighters Association, a testament to William’s passion for community service and support for those who serve. Friends and family are invited to share their thoughts and memories online, creating a lasting tribute to a remarkable man.
As Chattanooga mourns the loss of William “General” Allen Lee, his spirit and contributions will certainly live on in the hearts of many. A true community hero, his presence will be missed, but the memories and the impacts he made will always be cherished.
