Known for her vibrant personality, Alice was more than a beautician; she was a friend and mentor to many. Her influence extended beyond her beauty shop, earning her humanitarian recognition and a cherished place in the hearts of those she served. Her public viewing and memorial service are set to honor her contributions and legacy.
Chattanooga, Tennessee, is mourning the loss of a cherished figure in the community, Alice V. Grimes Linder, who passed away recently, leaving behind a legacy of beauty, love, and laughter. Born on December 26, 1946, at ten minutes after midnight, Alice brightened the world around her and touched the lives of many through her work as a beautician and her unwavering commitment to the community.
Alice was the third child of proud parents Fred N. and Maude P. Grimes. Growing up in the heart of Chattanooga, she attended local public schools and graduated from Howard High School in 1964. It was there she showcased her talent, singing in the school choir and laying the groundwork for her future endeavors. After a year at Chattanooga City College, she decided to delve into the world of cosmetology.
Under the guidance of the esteemed Tennessee beautician Ann Sanderfur at Bab’s Shop for Beauty, Alice honed her skills. It wasn’t long before she showcased her talent by passing the state beautician boards on her very first attempt, impressively scoring a perfect mark. Alice began her professional career in the welcoming shop of family friend Ora Dodds, where she cultivated her talent and charisma as a stylist.
Eventually, Alice took a bold step and opened her own beauty shop named Strand Designs. This wasn’t just a place for hair and beauty; it quickly gained a reputation as a lively hub of laughter and conversation. Clients found not only a stylist in Alice but a friend who made them feel comfortable, encouraging an atmosphere where humorous life solutions were shared freely.
Alice’s influence stretched far beyond her beauty shop. Known for her vibrant personality and infectious humor, she was recognized for her contributions to the community as well. She participated in activities like playing Pokeno with friends and received a humanitarian award from the Lookout Counseling Association, celebrating her dedication to making a difference in the lives of others.
As a devoted member of Phillips Temple C.M.E. Church, Alice continued to share her passion for music by singing in the church choir and nurturing the next generation by teaching Sunday School to primary-aged children. Family was crucial to Alice, and after the passing of her sister Minnie in 2016, she relocated to Washington, D.C., to live with her brother’s family. After her brother’s death in 2018, she moved again, this time to Piscataway, NJ, where she lived with her sister. While unable to attend church services, her spirit remained vibrant through the streamed services from Cathedral International every Sunday morning.
Alice was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, but her legacy endures through her loved ones. She is survived by her son, Robert (Shawn) Linder-McDowell, sisters Frances A. Grimes and Freddie G. Thompson, and a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family. Each person she touched carries a piece of Alice in their hearts, remembering her warmth and kindness.
Alice also had a special bond with a close friend, Geraldine C. Darden, as well as devoted caregivers who made her feel cherished. The kindness she showed to every cousin, relative, and friend created a network of love that will continue to thrive.
Alice’s life will be honored with a public viewing starting at 9:00 AM on April 29, followed by a service at 11:00 AM. Following the service, she will be interred at Forest Hills Cemetery in a ceremony managed by John P. Franklin Funeral Home in Chattanooga.
As the community reflects on Alice’s colorful life, they will remember her not only as a beautician but also as a heartfelt friend, teacher, and community leader. The laughter, wisdom, and love she shared with everyone around her will be dearly missed.
