Chattanooga Remembers Beloved Community Member Jimmy Franklin Wade After His Passing at 83

Chattanooga Mourns the Loss of a Beloved Community Member

Chattanooga, a city known for its warmth and love of community, has recently felt the profound loss of a remarkable resident, Jimmy Franklin Wade. At the age of 83, Jimmy passed away on October 11, 2024, leaving behind a legacy filled with love, service, and dedication.

A Life Rooted in Chattanooga

Born on March 7, 1941, to the late James Eldridge Wade and Edith Mae Slagle Wade, Jimmy was a true Chattanoogan. A proud graduate of Chattanooga City High School’s Class of 1959, he embarked on a journey that would not only define his life but also positively impact many others around him. In 1962, he met and married his sweetheart, Linda Sue, a bond that would last a lifetime.

Military Service and Accomplishments

After earning a bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering from the University of Chattanooga in 1964, Jimmy answered the call of duty by enlisting in the United States Army, where he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant. His military career was marked by notable achievements, including attending the prestigious Army Air Defense School at Fort Bliss, Texas, and serving in various capacities, defining his role as a leader in the Army’s air defense operations. During his time with the Cleveland Army Air Defense, he was recognized as the “Outstanding Lieutenant” in 1965 and was promoted to 1st Lieutenant and Battery Commander shortly after.

A Diverse and Successful Career

After completing his active duty in May 1966 and honorable discharge from the reserves in December 1969, Jimmy transitioned into a fulfilling career. His experience spanned numerous industries, including positions as a Quality Engineer and Marketing Manager at 3M Corporation, and ultimately he made his mark as a Sales and Marketing Manager at Coors Ceramic Company/Coors Tek.

Jimmy retired in 2014 from AdTech Ceramics, where he served as a marketing consultant, capping off a successful career driven by innovation and excellence.

Passions and Hobbies

Outside of work, Jimmy enjoyed a wide array of hobbies. He was an avid biker and practiced various martial arts, including Bando and Tai Chi. Remaining active was important to him, and he found joy in working out and reading extensively, especially about military history relating to the Civil War and WWII. Additionally, he loved spending time with family and his dog, O’Malley.

A Dedicated Community Member

Jimmy’s spirit of service extended beyond his professional life into the heart of the Chattanooga community. He was deeply involved in many organizations, such as the National Medal of Heritage Center, the Signal Mountain Lions Club, and the American Battlefield Trust. His contributions were recognized when he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Heritage Center.

Family and Legacy

Though he has departed this life, Jimmy is survived by a loving family who cherished him dearly. He leaves behind his two children, Scott and Kelley, and their families, including several grandchildren and great-grandchildren who will carry his memory forward. Sadly, Jimmy was preceded in death by his devoted wife, Linda Sue, whose love and partnership shaped his life.

A Final Farewell

Friends, family, and community members are invited to celebrate Jimmy’s life on Monday, October 21, at the Chattanooga Funeral Home East Chapel located at 404 South Moore Road, East Ridge, TN. Visitation will take place from 10 a.m. until the Celebration of Life Service at 12 p.m. Jimmy will be laid to rest alongside his beloved wife in the Chattanooga National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to Hospice of Chattanooga, Prison Prevention Ministries, or the Coolidge National Medal of Honor Heritage Center in Jimmy’s memory.

As we remember Jimmy, it is clear that his impact on the Chattanooga community and his family will be felt for many years to come. His kindness, service, and passion for life are qualities we can all aspire to emulate.
