Chattanooga Community Mourns the Loss of Beloved Local Figure John Greenough Wilson

Chattanooga Bids Farewell to a Beloved Community Member

Chattanooga, Tennessee, is remembering a cherished member of its community, John Greenough Wilson, who passed away on October 13, 2024. He was just 45 years old, but his impact on the lives of those around him will be felt for years to come.

A Life Full of Adventure and Passion

Born on March 31, 1979, in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, John lived a life rich in experiences and learning. His early childhood was spent in the quaint town of McMinnville before moving on to Sewanee, where he would call home through much of his school years. For those who knew him, John was much more than just a student; he was a curious learner with an insatiable love for both animals and education.

John graduated from the St. Andrew’s-Sewanee School, laying a strong foundation for his future endeavors. He went on to obtain a degree from the University of Colorado Boulder, embracing life in the vibrant collegiate atmosphere of Boulder, Colorado. After completing his studies, John took his passion for animals to the Pacific Northwest, moving to the Portland, Oregon area. There, he worked for several years at the Oregon Zoo and Reed College, where he skillfully combined his love for wildlife with his dedication to education.

Returning Home

Yet, like many who hold family dear, John eventually found his way back to Tennessee, seeking to be closer to his roots and loved ones. Family was incredibly important to him, and he is survived by his mother, Rowena (Randy) Robinson; his father, Jack Wilson; and his brother, Winston Wilson. The bond they shared with John was evident in every story spoken and every memory cherished.

Celebration of Life

A Celebration of John’s Life is set to take place on Saturday, October 19, at 3 p.m. at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home. Friends and family are encouraged to gather from 1 p.m. until the service time for a visitation. It promises to be a heartfelt event where stories, laughter, and even tears can be shared in remembrance of John.

Giving Back

In keeping with John’s lifelong passion for animals, the family requests that donations be made to the McKamey Animal Center. These contributions are a beautiful way to honor his legacy, reflecting his deep care and dedication to the creatures that brought him so much joy throughout his life.

Final Arrangements

Arrangements for John are being handled by the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory, and Florist, located at 5401 Highway 153, Hixson, TN 37343. Community members and friends are urged to share their thoughts and fond memories on the family’s designated tribute page.

Remembering More Lives

In the spirit of remembrance, it is also essential to acknowledge others in the community who have recently left us. Young Samuel “Sam” Neumann Jessen, just 12 years old, passed away on October 11, 2024. His spirited presence at the Chattanooga School for the Liberal Arts will surely be missed. Similarly, Jessica Caitlin Bledsoe, known for her warm heart, peacefully departed on October 9, 2024, at the age of 34. Her decision to become an organ donor reflects her generous spirit and serve as a reminder of the importance of kindness.

As Chattanooga grieves, it also celebrates the lives that have touched so many. The community comes together to offer support, share stories, and remember those individuals whose spirits will forever remain intertwined in the fabric of this vibrant town.
