Chattanooga Says Goodbye to Beloved Community Members

Chattanooga, Tennessee, is mourning the loss of some dear residents who left a mark on the hearts of many. The community came together this week to honor the lives of those who have recently passed away, reminding us all of the importance of cherishing our loved ones.

A Fond Farewell to Mattie “Joann” Davis

One such person was Mattie “Joann” Davis, who passed away on Friday, October 4, 2024, at the age of 83. Raised in Chattanooga and born on November 27, 1940, Joann was more than just a resident; she was a beloved figure in the community. Known for her vibrant spirit, Joann spent many years working for Mohawk Carpets, where she likely left a lasting impression on her coworkers.

Joann was an avid sports enthusiast, proudly cheering on the Atlanta Braves and the Tennessee Vols. Her love for sports was just one part of what made her so special. She also enjoyed gathering around tables with family and friends, playing board games and cards, where laughter and friendly competition filled the air.

She will be dearly missed by her sons, William (Donna) Davis, Jr. and John Anthony (Deanna) Davis, as well as her grandson, Tyler Davis. Joann also leaves behind a niece, Lynn Holcomb, a nephew, Greg Thomas, and many other cherished family members and friends. Joann’s graveside service will take place on Monday, October 7, at 3 p.m. at Hamilton Memorial Gardens in Chattanooga. Family and friends can gather to pay their respects from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the funeral home.

Remembering Other Cherished Lives

This past week was not just about Joann; the community also paid its respects to other beloved citizens. Among them was Margaret Ann DeLorenzo, who passed away on Tuesday, October 1, 2024. At 77 years old, she was the daughter of Kenneth Shirley and Mary Smail. Margaret’s impact on her family and friends will live on in their hearts.

Additionally, Ernest “Wayne” Turner, affectionately known as “Wahoo!” by his close friends, died on September 30, 2024, at the age of 80 after a courageous battle with prostate cancer. Wayne was known for his adventurous spirit and kind heart. His friends fondly remember the memories made together, highlighting the bond they shared.

Another loss felt keenly throughout the community was that of George “Edwin” Nussbaum, who passed on October 1, 2024. Edwin was a devoted husband and family man, having been married to his wife, Dorothy Marie Nussbaum, for an astonishing 64 years. His love and commitment to family left a legacy sure to inspire those who knew him.
