Known for her adventurous spirit, Deborah’s life was marked by her love for family, education, and unique adventures. A celebration of her life is planned for March 14, 2025, at Ooltewah United Methodist Church where friends and family will gather to honor her legacy.
In the heart of Chattanooga, Tennessee, community members are coming together to celebrate the life of the unforgettable Deborah Marie Moore McLachlan, who passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 1, 2025, at the age of 73. Deborah’s passing leaves a mark not only on her family but also on the many lives she touched throughout her remarkable journey.
Born to the late Alex G. and June C. Moore, Deborah’s vibrant spirit was evident from a young age. She made quite a name for herself as an all-star basketball player at Tyner High School, where she earned the title of the most athletic female in her senior class. But Deborah was not just an athlete; she was a true adventurer at heart. Her thirst for excitement led her to try a wide array of activities ranging from snow skiing to flying in hot air balloons. And in a remarkable display of her ever-present zest for life, she celebrated her 70th birthday by going hang gliding.
Throughout her life, Deborah explored not only the beautiful landscapes of the United States but also ventured overseas, making wonderful memories during her time living in France. This adventurous spirit was a reflection of her deep love for life and all its possibilities.
In addition to her love for adventure, Deborah dedicated many years to education, inspiring countless students along the way. She enjoyed a fulfilling career that culminated in her retirement from Cleveland State Community College, where her impact as an educator was felt deeply by students and colleagues alike.
Yet, at the center of her many accomplishments was her family. Deborah was not only a devoted wife for 30 years to her husband, Robert James McLachlan, Jr., but also a proud and loving mother and grandmother. Her family includes daughters Heather M. (John C.) Jenkinson from Knoxville and Allison (Ross) Elia residing in Ringgold, as well as cherished step-daughters Anne (Jared) Butler of Apison, Kaki (Julia) McLachlan from Fairfax, California, and Taylor (Sam) Shapero of Atlanta. Deborah was truly blessed with a large family, as she is survived by a whopping 12 grandchildren and a brother, Donald G. (Jeana Fleitz) Moore from Louisville, Kentucky. Her niece, Lynn Kropp of Lombard, Illinois, also holds her memory dear.
A heartfelt celebration of Deborah’s life is set to take place at Ooltewah United Methodist Church on Friday, March 14, 2025, at 4 p.m., where family and friends are warmly welcomed to gather and share their favorite memories and stories about this incredible woman. Following the service, a reception will provide an opportunity for everyone to connect and honor Deborah’s legacy together.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial contributions be made to The American Diabetes Association or McKamey Animal Center. These organizations reflect Deborah’s spirit and passions, particularly her affection for animals as a proud rescue dog mom.
Arrangements for this celebration of life are entrusted to Covenant Funeral & Crematory, a family-owned operation that understands the significance of honoring a loved one. Deborah’s legacy of love, adventure, and education will continue to inspire all who knew her. She will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by many.
