A Midwesterner at Heart, A Southerner in Spirit

Catherine Hopping Adamson Parker, aged 88, a resident of Chattanooga, Tennessee, passed away on Tuesday, March 19, 2024. Known for her vivacious spirit and commitment to community development, Catherine was a beloved figure in the local landscape. She was a steadfast friend, a voracious reader, and a relentless advocate of grassroots initiatives. Although originally from the Midwest, she seamlessly incorporated Southern charm into her dynamic lifestyle.

An Icon of Chattanooga’s Development

Along with a partner, Catherine was a pioneering force in the development of Frazier Avenue. Their vision transformed what was once a dilapidated area into a vibrant community hub. This versatility came on the heels of the Walnut Street Bridge’s transition into a pedestrian bridge in 1993. Catherine’s innovative mindset and unerring eye for opportunity were instrumental in driving this change.

In fact, Catherine’s penchant for community development extended beyond Chattanooga. Following her success with the local initiatives, She also invested her talents in the Tennessee Aquarium’s early retail operations and the specialty gift shops at the Chattanooga Choo Choo. This Midwestern transplant’s impact extended even to Kuwait, where The Scientific Center recruited her for a multi-year stint.

Remembering Catherine

It is indubitably a tremendous loss for the community as Catherine is no longer with us. Her legacy, however, resonates through her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, paralleled with her notable contributions to Chattanooga’s socio-economic fabric. Her determination, intelligence, and distinctive style continue to inspire those who knew her, echoing in the streets of the city she helped shape.

Catherine exemplified a life not just lived, but lived with purpose. She committed herself to the well-being of her community and championed grassroots causes. Her deep appreciation for the arts and nature reflected her zeal for life and wide-ranging interests.

Survived by Love and Legacy

She is survived by her five children, John (Barbara) Adamson, Jeanie Adamson Brakebill, Mary (Jeff) Cooper, Jennifer (Tommy) Hobbs, and Chris (Bryn) Adamson, along with numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A Celebrated Memory

A memorial celebration will be held in Catherine’s honor on Saturday, May 4, 2024, at Rising Fawn Gardens located at 521 Cureton Mill Road, in Rising Fawn, Georgia. The three-hour gathering will commence at noon and sneak peeks into Catherine’s extraordinary life will start at 1 p.m. It will offer an opportunity for the community to come together to celebrate the life of a woman who significantly influenced the Chattanooga community and beyond.
