Community Remembers Cherished Lives in Chattanooga

As the leaves begin to change and autumn settles in, the city of Chattanooga is coming together to honor and remember some remarkable individuals who recently passed away. These beloved members of our community may have left this world, but their legacies will forever be woven into the fabric of our lives.

Frances “Sue” Jones: A Life Filled with Love and Dedication

On October 2, 2024, the community lost a gem, Frances “Sue” Jones, who graced this earth for 95 joyful years. Born on May 1, 1929, in Five Points, Alabama, Sue devoted her life to both her family and her work. She spent an incredible forty years at Dixie Yarns Corporation, where she was known for her dedication and warmth.

Sadly, Sue is preceded in death by her cherished husband, Henry Jones, as well as her beloved mother, Jeanie Mangham. She also leaves behind the memories of her three sisters—Carrie Cothran, Annie Mae Harrison, and Willie Eva Potts—and her brother, Joe Potts. The loss of her nephew, Jasper Potts, was particularly hard for her family, but she leaves behind a legacy that will be remembered fondly.

Although Sue has departed, she leaves behind so many precious memories for her numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins. Her spirit and kindness will live on in all who knew her.

Family and friends are invited to gather for a public viewing that will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday, October 19, leading up to the service at 11 a.m. in the chapel of John P. Franklin Funeral Home. Following the service, Sue will be laid to rest at Beautiful Greenwood Cemetery.

Shirley Anne Evans Ewton Rawlston: A Peaceful Departure

Just days later, on October 6, 2024, another beloved member of the community left us. Shirley Anne Evans Ewton Rawlston, aged 89, passed away peacefully at home after a brave fight against cancer. Born on September 18, 1935, in Chattanooga, her legacy is built on resilience and strength.

Evelyn B. Taylor: A Heartfelt Goodbye

In addition to Sue and Shirley, the community is mourning the loss of Evelyn B. Taylor, who went home to be with the Lord on September 26, 2024. Evelyn, born on May 19, 1937, to Charles and Beatrice Johnson Baker, was known for her warm heart and compassionate spirit. Her presence will undoubtedly be missed by all who were fortunate enough to have known her.

Paul Howard Scates: Musical Soul and Loving Friend

Lastly, we remember Paul Howard Scates, aged 55, who passed away on October 6, 2024. Paul was well-loved in East Ridge, where he shared his many creative talents as a graphic artist. Known for his love of trivia, music, and playing guitar, Paul also had a special place in his heart for his cat, Jasper. His artistic spirit and zest for life touched many around him.

Chattanooga has indeed lost some incredible souls in these past few weeks. Yet, as we remember these four individuals, we celebrate their lives, their stories, and the impact they have had on our community. In the coming days, let us all come together to support each other and honor those we have loved and lost.
