Chattanooga Courthouse Volunteers Brave Cold for Community Clean-Up Day

Chattanooga’s Courthouse Gets a Spring Clean on a Winter Day

On a chilly Thursday morning, the Hamilton County Criminal Court Clerk’s Office organized a heartwarming “clean up day” outside the Courts Building in Chattanooga. Around 20 dedicated deputy clerks from all three office locations rolled up their sleeves to pick up trash and give the courthouse grounds a much-needed tidy. It’s important work, and Criminal Court Clerk Vince Dean couldn’t be prouder of his team’s enthusiasm for the task.

Community Spirit in Action

When asked about the turnout, Dean expressed his surprise, stating, “We have around 60 employees altogether, and the fact that so many volunteered to help out today was just amazing.” While some staff members remained in the office to ensure that the regular workflow and service levels were maintained, those who ventured outside showcased a remarkable sense of community spirit.

The timing of the event was strategic, chosen because the District Attorneys and Public Defenders were engaged in a conference this week, leading to lighter-than-usual traffic in the courthouse. “We did not, however, anticipate it being the *coldest day of the year*,” Dean chuckled. It’s safe to say that the deputy clerks certainly showed a willingness to brave the elements for a good cause!

More Than Just Picking Up Trash

This cleanup effort was more than just picking up litter; it was about fostering a welcoming environment. According to Dean, “Our employees realize that not everyone coming to the Courts Building come because they have done something wrong. We have victims of crimes, families of victims, falsely accused individuals, attorneys, and county employees coming in and out of the building. We think they should not have to step over trash as they come in.” That perspective is a vital reminder that, for many, the courthouse is a place of both stress and hope.

As the deputy clerks collected several bags of trash—some of which included unusual finds like parts of an abandoned bicycle and a large piece of metal—they donned their provided rubber gloves and got to work. It became a morning not only of physical labor but of camaraderie and shared purpose.

Looking Ahead

In the spirit of teamwork, the Hamilton County Maintenance Department is planning to follow up by pressure washing the area, enhancing the impact of the cleanup effort. The result will be a fresh and welcoming space for everyone who visits the courthouse in the future.

A Call for Appreciation

Dean wrapped up the day’s activities with an important message for the community. “If you happen to visit the Courts Building, please take a moment to thank the employees for all they do—not just today, but every day they go beyond their calling and deserve appreciation.” It’s clear that the employees take immense pride in their workplace and want to ensure that it reflects the respect and dignity owed to all who enter.

As residents of Chattanooga enjoy the efforts put forth by the Criminal Court Clerk’s Office on this remarkable morning, it serves as a reminder that sometimes simple acts can make a difference, and community pride shines bright even on the coldest of days. Who knew a clean-up day could bring so much warmth?
