Sponsor Our ArticlesChristoffer Collins, a former basketball coach at Chattanooga Preparatory School, has been sentenced to 30 days in jail for domestic assault involving his wife. The incident, which occurred in August 2023, escalated into violence that was recorded on video. Despite initially facing a potential 3-6 year prison term, he received a judicial diversion, allowing for possible record expungement if he completes mandated programs such as anger management and counseling. The community expresses mixed reactions to Collins’ dramatic fall from grace.
In a shocking turn of events, Chattanooga is buzzing with news after Christoffer Collins, a former basketball coach at Chattanooga Preparatory School, was sentenced to 30 days in jail for domestic assault. The ruling came down on March 18, 2025, leaving many in the community in disbelief.
The troubling incident took place back on August 7, 2023, outside a restaurant near Hamilton Place. It all started when a dispute escalated between Collins and his wife, culminating in a violent confrontation that was caught on video. This disturbing footage became a pivotal element in the court’s decision. Witnesses reported seeing Collins hit his wife several times, pulling her by the hair, and visibly showing aggression.
As if that weren’t enough, a bystander claimed to have overheard Collins making threatening remarks while reaching towards his waistband, adding a layer of fear to an already tense situation. It raised serious concerns about his behavior and intentions during that critical moment.
In light of this severe incident, the District Attorney’s Office made it clear they opposed any leniency for Collins, particularly in the form of judicial diversion. Initially, he faced the possibility of a 3-6 year prison sentence, which is a standard punishment for such serious offenses. However, after the legal appeals, the final verdict allowed Collins to be placed under judicial diversion for four years. This means that if he manages to stay out of trouble during that timeframe, the charge could potentially be erased from his record.
Looking to curb future incidents and encourage rehabilitation, the presiding Judge Barry Steelman mandated Collins to attend several programs, including anger management courses, marital counseling, and even defensive driving school. These programs aim to address not just the violent behavior but also any underlying issues he might face.
Although Collins has no prior criminal record and was considered a low risk to re-offend, the community has mixed feelings. Family and friends of Collins have expressed that this incident is not typical for him and that he has shown regret for his actions. It’s hard to reconcile the kind of person they know with what occurred that day. Many still find it hard to digest that someone who was once celebrated as a teacher of the year and coach of the year could be involved in such an incident.
For context, Collins, 41, was widely respected in the local community. He is a graduate of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and was well recognized for his contributions to youth sports. Many admired him for running a successful basketball training school that has aided several talented athletes in earning college scholarships. His transformation from a role model to a defendant in a domestic abuse case is a stark contrast, making this a headline that many are discussing.
As Collins embarks on the road to redemption, it remains to be seen how this chapter in his life will unfold. While he serves his sentence and begins his programs, the community watches closely, hoping for a positive transformation.
