Chattanooga Joins Electric Vehicle Revolution with Novonix and Stellantis Partnership

Chattanooga Sparks Electric Vehicle Revolution with Major Deal!

Chattanooga is buzzing with excitement as Novonix, a leading manufacturer of electric vehicle battery materials, has just announced a game-changing agreement with automotive giant Stellantis. This partnership signals a robust step forward for both companies as they dive headfirst into the burgeoning world of electric vehicles (EVs).

Big Plans in the Works

Imagine this: by 2025, Novonix is set to kick off the first large-scale production of high-quality synthetic graphite right in the heart of Chattanooga. This essential material will help power the future of EVs. How much synthetic graphite, you ask? Well, Novonix has committed to delivering up to 115,000 tons to Stellantis between 2026 and 2031. That’s no small potatoes, and it’s a clear sign that the demand for electric vehicles is shooting through the roof!

Words from the Top

Chris Burns, chief executive of Novonix, couldn’t hide his enthusiasm. He expressed his delight in having Stellantis as the company’s largest customer and what it means for their North American EV growth plans. “We are excited to have Stellantis’ commitment, now as our largest customer, to support their North American EV growth plans,” he stated. This partnership not only promises a steady supply of essential materials but also reinforces Novonix’s leading role in transforming the EV supply chain right here in the U.S.

The Heart of the Operations

So, how will this all come together? The synthetic graphite will be supplied to Stellantis’ cell manufacturing partners located in North America, straight from Novonix’s Riverfront Parkway facility and a planned expansion site nearby. Speaking of expansion, Burns noted that this contract allows for maximal production capacity at their current facility while also paving the way for future developments. “This contract allocates the remainder of our available volumes at our Riverside facility and a portion of volumes to be produced at our planned greenfield facility,” he explained.

Job Opportunities on the Horizon

As Novonix gears up for this massive production, they are also looking to hire! Back in late 2021, they set up shop at the former Alstom factory in The Bend and aim to create around 300 jobs. This drive for employment is not just a win for the company but a fantastic opportunity for the local community. The operations at Novonix are approaching what Burns termed “revolutionary technology.” It’s not every day that you get to witness a technological breakthrough right in your own backyard!

Financial Backing and Future Plans

The company has also been proactive about seeking federal support. Earlier in the year, Novonix won a whopping $103 million federal tax credit to assist with the production at the Riverfront Parkway plant. Additionally, they are in talks with the U.S. Department of Energy regarding a possible loan for a second production plant, which is also in the works. The goal for this greenfield facility isn’t just ambitious; it aims to kick off with a capacity of 30,000 tons per year and eventually ramp up to 75,000 tons per year!

Chattanooga’s Bright EV Future

With the ongoing discussions about the location of this second facility, Chattanooga is definitely in the spotlight. The city has been recognized for its potential as an EV hub, with a proposed site at the Enterprise South industrial park near the Volkswagen assembly plant being floated. Volkswagen is even stepping aside from its option on this tract to open it up for potential electric vehicle ventures!

It’s an exciting time for Chattanooga, as Novonix’s plans unfold and make waves in the EV industry. With significant contributions from local businesses, an inflow of jobs, and advanced technology, the city is on the verge of altering the electric vehicle landscape. The future looks electric, and Chattanooga is leading the charge!
