As the vibrant colors of fall settle in, it’s that time of year again! Daylight saving time is coming to an end, and it’s time for everyone in Chattanooga to set their watches and clocks back an hour. For some, this is a simple task of a quick twist of the wrist, but for clock enthusiasts, it can be a bit of a time-consuming endeavor.
Glenn and Sherry Kitts, who are co-general chairs of the National Association of Watch & Clock Collectors (NAWCC), have quite a collection at home. With numerous clocks and watches adorning their walls, they admit it’s just easier to leave them on the same settings rather than change them twice a year. Yet one might wonder, how did they fall in love with timepieces?
The couple first crossed paths back in 2007 at the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum, where Glenn worked. Sherry took a train ride, and little did they know that their love for both the railway and the history of time would lead them to an enchanting journey together. Fast forward, and they even tied the knot at the railway museum, sealing their bond with yet another layer of time.
The NAWCC isn’t just any organization; it’s a haven for clock and watch lovers, providing insights and connections across the globe since 1943. Their annual convention is a delightful mix of activities, booths, and educational sessions. Just this past June, the event was held in Chattanooga. It was the perfect opportunity for members and enthusiasts alike to immerse themselves in the world of horology, featuring captivating lectures and an impressive 500 booths where individuals could peruse exotic timepieces.
This gathering really sparks interest! They not only cater to expert collectors but also to those new to this intriguing hobby. You could feel excitement thrumming through the air during the keynote speech from Bob Frishman on automobile clocks. Plus, attendees were thrilled to win door prizes that added a touch of excitement to their day!
Glenn and Sherry believe that collecting watches isn’t just a fun pastime—it can also be quite lucrative! Sherry points out, “People have made enough to finance their college education!” It’s true; those with a knack for watch repairs and restorations are always in demand, making it a fantastic side gig. If you’re retired or simply seeking a hobby, diving into watch and clock collecting could add joy to your days.
When it comes to collecting, authenticity is crucial! The NAWCC has a strict code of ethics in place. Members are always on the lookout for any timepiece fraud—after all, the integrity of the collection community is of utmost importance. And while there’s usually no trouble with counterfeit items at the conventions, vigilant eyes ensure that everyone walks away with the real deal!
Chattanooga has an incredible history tied to trains and timekeeping. Before signaling technology, railway workers relied solely on pocket watches to navigate their schedules safely—talk about pressure! Just imagine how crucial it was for a conductor to have an accurate watch. Glenn passionately shares, “If your watch was reading the incorrect time, even by just two minutes, someone’s life could be in danger.”
As the convention wrapped up, attendees parted ways with smiles and stories, eagerly looking ahead to next year’s gathering in York, Pennsylvania. Timepieces might tick and tock, but the bonds created over a shared appreciation for horology will last forever. So, until we meet again, keep collecting, restoring, and, most importantly, appreciating the beautiful art of timekeeping!
