CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — The city of Chattanooga is set to undergo a significant transformation thanks to a new federal grant. The Department of Energy has announced a funding award of $2.9 million to support the creation of an energy-efficient resilience hub at the James A. Henry building. This initiative is part of a larger effort under the Biden-Harris Administration’s Investing in America agenda.
Chattanooga was chosen as one of just 12 local governments and tribes to receive a share of over $31 million provided through the Communities Sparking Investments in Transformative Energy (C-SITE) program. The goal of this program is to foster high-impact clean energy projects, particularly in disadvantaged communities, and areas with smaller populations.
The James A. Henry building, which has been closed, will be renovated and expanded to serve multiple purposes. City leaders plan to transform the site into a community resilience hub that will not only focus on energy efficiency but will also provide essential services for the local residents.
According to local officials, the hub will play a critical role in enhancing community services. The renovation will introduce various energy-saving features such as roof insulation, high-performance windows, and LED lighting. Additionally, a new efficient chiller will be installed to improve energy consumption at the facility. All these upgrades aim to create a center that is not just functional but also environmentally responsible.
Mayor Tim Kelly expressed his enthusiasm regarding the project, stating, “The James A. Henry building was already going to operate as a health clinic and early childhood education center for the people of the Westside, and now it will also be an energy efficient resilience hub.” He continued by emphasizing the significance of the grant by saying, “This grant was only possible because of our Climate Action Plan and the hard work of the Chattanooga Housing Authority. I want to thank the Department of Energy for recognizing the need for investment on the Westside.”
This funding is just one part of a broader movement towards sustainability and resilience in Chattanooga. The city has been actively pursuing projects aimed at not only addressing current community needs but also preparing for potential future challenges caused by climate change.
The establishment of the resilience hub will enable local residents to access better resources and services while also contributing to a reduction in energy usage and promoting a greener environment. As part of this initiative, the city aims to set an example for other communities by showing how targeted investments can lead to significant improvements in both community health and the environment.
As the city moves forward with the planning and implementation phases of this project, officials will focus on engaging with the community to ensure that the resilience hub meets the specific needs of the residents. This engagement will include discussions about job opportunities and services that will be offered at the center.
The expected completion of the renovation will be closely monitored, and further updates will follow as Chattanooga embarks on this ambitious project. With this grant, the city is poised to enhance not only the physical property of the James A. Henry building but also the quality of life for many in the Westside community.
