Chattanooga Fire Artists Ignite Creativity and Thrill in the Community

Chattanooga’s Fire Artists Are Sparking Creativity and Thrill!

In the vibrant city of Chattanooga, a group of passionate individuals is lighting up the performance scene with their incredible skills as fire artists. Imagine the excitement of watching someone twirl a flaming baton or swallow fire – it’s a spectacle that brings awe and amazement to any audience! Among the standout performers are Aubrey Henriksen and her best friend Kaitlyn Cange, who have taken their love for fire performance from humble beginnings to professional heights since their move to the city in 2008 for their studies at UTC.

From Hobbyists to Professionals

When they first arrived in Chattanooga, Aubrey and Kaitlyn sought a way to fill their free time. As Aubrey playfully admits, “We were young and dumb.” With curiosity on their side, they explored the thrilling world of fire performance, often using the internet and platforms like YouTube to teach themselves the ropes. “I learned so many things from YouTube,” Aubrey chuckled, reminiscing on their self-taught journey.

In 2010, they officially formed the Chattanooga Fire Cabaret, bringing together a group of 8-10 talented artists. Their mission? To connect local performance artists with paid opportunities to showcase their art and captivate audiences. Since then, they have steadily honed their skills and developed a safe, professional approach to their fiery performances.

Safety First!

One thing about fire performers is that safety is always at the forefront. “We researched what kind of safety equipment we needed,” Aubrey shared. They use fuels like Coleman’s Camp fuel and lamp oil for their performances. “Coleman burns brightly but is not explosive, which is a big relief,” Aubrey explained with a smile. Fire performers always aim to strike the perfect balance between a dazzling display and safe practice.

When practice sessions occur – often at the amphitheater under the Walnut Street walking bridge – there have been a few close calls. According to Aubrey, “Like with anything else, if you are going to be a skateboarder, you’re going to skin your knees sometimes.” Thankfully, despite the inherent risks, the team has not faced any severe injuries throughout their years entertaining the crowds.

The Art of Fire Eating

Aubrey discovered her love for fire eating along the way, learning from those who had experience in the art. “Fire eating is tricky,” she mentioned, emphasizing the importance of breath control and understanding how to manipulate the vapors from the flame safely. It’s a true blend of artistry and skill that adds to their captivating performances!

Upcoming Events and Engaging Additions

The Chattanooga Fire Cabaret has become a fixture at various community and private events, dazzling attendees with displays of fire-eating, flaming hula hoops, and other thrilling acts. Mark your calendars because they’ll be performing at this year’s Fire Up the Fields on October 19 at Sculptures Fields! This annual event has been a community favorite since it started in 2010, organized by local artist Andrew Nigh.

Aubrey also adds that fall marks their busy season. “It’s spooky season,” she exclaimed enthusiastically. “We often perform at Halloween parties, community festivals, and circus-themed events, which adds to the excitement of our performances!”

Expanding Creativity

Alongside her fire performance career, Aubrey has ventured into event planning with a new business, Chattanooga Event Entertainment LLC, where she books various artists, including belly dancers, stilt walkers, and even comedians. This venture allows her to connect with even more creative talents and offer unforgettable experiences for anyone looking to plan an engaging event.

So, if you’re looking for a way to ignite some excitement at your next gathering, consider reaching out to the Chattanooga Fire Cabaret. With their dazzling skills and enchanting performances, they’re sure to create memories that your guests will cherish for years to come!
