Chattanooga, Tennessee, is all abuzz this September as it prepares to host some of the biggest names in the giant screen film industry! From September 23 to September 26, the city will welcome about 200 professionals from around the globe, including filmmakers, producers, and exhibitors, who are all coming together for the Giant Screen Cinema Association’s (GSCA) International Conference.
Ever wondered why seeing movies on giant screens at theaters feels so different from watching them on a regular TV or even your smartphone? Well, it’s all about the experience! Corey Cobb, who oversees IMAX operations at the Tennessee Aquarium IMAX 3D Theater, said it best: “Seeing isn’t just believing, it’s borderline essential.” Cobb emphasized that seeing an immersive documentary on a massive screen can transform the way you feel about the film. “There have been films that I’ve not actually been that impressed with on a small screen, but in our theater, it’s like, ‘Oh wow, that’s actually very immersive,’” he revealed.
The magic of these giant formats creates an experience that pulls audiences into the story, taking them on enchanting journeys into exotic landscapes and cosmic adventures, leaving the everyday world far behind.
In today’s fast-paced world, where most media consumption happens on small devices, large-format theaters are holding their ground as the last refuge of their kind. The advances in filmmaking equipment have opened new avenues for storytelling that just weren’t possible a decade ago. The excitement surrounding this rise in technology means that theaters like those in Chattanooga are bouncing back quicker after the pandemic’s impact, as noted by Tammy Barrett, the executive director of the GSCA. “As traditional cinemas face increasing competition from home entertainment, the giant-screen industry’s ability to offer a distinctly superior viewing experience has become a critical factor in its recovery,” Barrett shared.
The conference is kicking off with a unique “Dome Day” event at the McWane Science Center, which promises to focus on the immersive potential of wraparound screens. As the conference transitions to the Tennessee Aquarium IMAX 3D Theater—home to one of Chattanooga’s largest screens—participants will have the chance to see and preview 16 large-format films.
Greg Sanford from the McWane Science Center noted that the use of IMAX with Laser technology takes the viewing experience to a whole new level. “All IMAX theaters are good, but there’s a special cut above when you have IMAX with Laser,” he explained. This technology ensures that films are experienced as the creators intended, giving viewers a breathtaking experience that is hard to find elsewhere.
This year’s GSCA conference promises to be a treasure trove of opportunities for networking, learning, and sharing experiences. Professionals from countries as far-flung as Japan, New Zealand, Sweden, and the United Kingdom will be in attendance! What a fantastic way to build connections and discover new insights in a unique niche of filmmaking.
As the conference approaches, Barrett expressed her enthusiasm: “I’m really looking forward to the conference, not just for the films and discussions, but also because of the incredible partnership the GSCA has with both the McWane Science Center and the Aquarium.” These partnerships blend education and entertainment seamlessly, enhancing what the giant-screen experience can offer.
During this exciting time, the Tennessee Aquarium IMAX 3D Theater will be closed to the public but don’t worry—the Aquarium will still be open for visitors. For those eager to catch a giant screen film in the near future, there are still options to purchase tickets and check showtimes.
