What a fantastic time to be a golf fan in Chattanooga! The summer of 2024 has truly been a remarkable season for the sport, showcasing incredible talent and achievements from local players and golf courses alike. From thrilling championships to exciting new courses, the golf scene in our beloved city is buzzing with energy!
First up, let’s talk about the prestigious 69th U.S. Senior Amateur Championship that took place at the stunning Honors Course in Ooltewah. This iconic venue added yet another celebrated event to its long list of accolades, solidifying its reputation as one of the best golf courses in the nation. Attendees got to witness Atlanta’s own Louis Brown claim the championship title, making it an event to remember!
But that’s not all! Golf enthusiasts in the area were also treated to the grand opening of The Keep, a brand-new golf course at McLemore Resort, designed by the talented duo of Bill Bergin and Rees Jones. Located in a picturesque setting, The Keep has already gained national acclaim for its design and layout, quickly becoming a must-visit course for golf lovers!
In other exciting news, Chattanooga’s own Stephan Jaeger achieved a milestone by securing his first PGA Tour victory at the Texas Children’s Houston Open. He also qualified for his very first Masters tournament, which is particularly thrilling for our local golf community. What an achievement!
And let’s not forget about Joe Markham Jr., who won the Tennessee Senior State Open after waiting an incredible 40 years since his last state title. His perseverance and passion for the game truly inspire fellow golfers!
Speaking of local talent, let’s shine a light on Baylor School athletes. Sheldon McKnight made headlines by winning the Tennessee Four-Ball Championship alongside MTSU teammate JJ Zimmer, showcasing their incredible teamwork and skill on the course. Meanwhile, blossoming star Carlee Rogers made an exciting announcement of her commitment to the University of Miami, after having a stellar year consistently delivering strong performances.
The golf community also saw a delightful surge in junior talent this year. Young golfers, including Baylor’s own Tucker Wick, participated in the state-level competitions and brought home impressive results. Their hard work reflects the growing emphasis on nurturing young talent within the sport, highlighted recently by the Gibby golf tournament and scholarship program, which awarded a total of $15,000 in scholarships to local high school seniors.
As we celebrate these wins, we also take a moment to honor the great contributions of figures within our community. Deck Cheatham, a respected golf professional at The Farm, announced his retirement after a remarkable 33 years of inspiring aspiring golfers. Meanwhile, the late Dr. Reed Sanderlin, former UTC golf coach, is remembered fondly for enhancing the program’s standing and encouraging countless athletes over his 28-season tenure.
With the PGA HOPE program continuing to support veterans through golf, graduating 91 participants this year alone, it’s clear that the spirit of the game is vibrant in Chattanooga. Additionally, this year’s Elite 18 campaign allowed fans to vote for their favorite golf holes, showcasing the unique charm of local courses across the area, which resulted in winners across ten different venues.
As we wrap up this exhilarating season, it’s safe to say that the golf scene in Chattanooga has never been more exciting! With budding stars emerging and cherished courses continually enhancing their offerings, the future of golf in our community is looking extraordinarily bright!
