Identified as a 67-year-old employee of the Chattanooga-Hamilton County Air Pollution Control Bureau, John Schultz, brandished a gun at his colleagues and attempted to fire, only to be thwarted by a malfunctioning firearm, local authorities stated.

The Chattanooga police received multiple calls on Monday afternoon, reporting an armed man firing shots inside an office building. Upon arrival, the responding officers discovered Schultz deceased, in an apparent self-inflicted shooting using a second firearm. Fortunately, no other individuals in the building were injured during this terrifying encounter.

Statements from Eyewitnesses

Ron Drumeller, the Executive Director of the Air Pollution Control Bureau, speaking with “HERE News Network,” reported that he was in close proximity to Schultz during the incident. Schultz entered Drumeller’s office carrying a bag, along with Amber Boles, the agency’s Director of Operations, he recounted. Schultz then locked the office door and started revealing his apparent emotional distress over the last few years.

Drumeller further narrated, “Schultz pulled out two pistols, aiming one at Amber and one at me. Upon seeing this, Amber yelled, attracting other employees towards the office.”

Drumeller said Schultz moved closer to him and attempted to fire the weapon, which repeatedly misfired. Seizing this opportunity, Drumeller pushed Schultz away and managed to escape the room unharmed.

Aftermath and Ongoing Investigation

Echoing Ripples of the incident spread beyond the affected office, with several nearby businesses including the Hamilton Place shopping mall enforcing a lockdown for about 90 minutes. Chattanooga police are currently investigating this incident, piecing together the events of the day.
