Chattanooga Seeks Community Input to Highlight Hidden Historical Gems

Chattanooga, Let’s Put Some Hidden Gems on the Historical Map!

Hey there, Chattanooga! If you love our vibrant city and its rich history, then we’ve got some exciting news for you. Have you ever strolled past a local spot and thought, “This place deserves a shiny historical marker to commemorate its significance?” Well, you’re not alone! History buffs and everyday explorers alike have come together to celebrate the countless tales hidden in plain sight around our beloved town.

Shining a Spotlight on Less-Known Spots

We all adore Cravens House — a beautiful treasure with stunning views and its own story to tell. And let’s not forget about the Bessie Smith Cultural Center, which enriches our community’s culture. But did you know that many local landmarks, streets, and buildings are longing for a little love and acknowledgment too? Now’s your chance to be a part of something special. Whether it’s a favorite restaurant, an iconic mural, or a cozy neighborhood spot, we want to hear about them!

Think of the Memories

Perhaps you find joy in the delicious meals at Bea’s Restaurant, once a haunt of the talented Leslie Jordan. Or maybe you can’t help but smile when you see the beloved “Flying Doughnut” mural by Joseph Giri, which was saved from the brink of being painted over. Each of these spots is bursting with history and deserves its moment in the limelight! Imagine how wonderful it would be for these places to be officially recognized as significant local treasures.

Join the Movement!

Here’s how you can participate: All you need to do is submit your suggestions for unofficial historical locations around Chattanooga. Your voice matters! The submissions are open now and will be accepted until 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday, December 3. Our dedicated team will select the finalists, and they’ll be featured in a newsletter that you can check out.

Vote for Your Favorites

But it doesn’t stop there. Once we have our finalists, you, the community, will have the chance to cast your vote for your favorite submission. Who knows? Your pick might just get a shiny new historical marker, or at the very least, a special place in our hearts. It’s about celebrating our city’s unique stories and honoring those places that hold special meaning for us.

Why Are Historical Markers Important?

You may wonder why these historical markers matter. They provide a fun and educational way to learn about our city’s past. Each marker is a glimpse into the stories that shaped Chattanooga — tales of its people, events, and places that hold fond memories for us all. They foster a sense of pride and community, reminding us of where we came from and sparking curiosity about our shared history.

So, What Are You Waiting For?

Don’t hesitate! Dive into your memory bank of historical spots that resonate with you. Whether it’s a beautiful mural or an iconic diner, every little detail contributes to the richer tapestry of our city’s narrative. You can feel the excitement in the air as we unite to honor these remarkable locations that are just waiting to be appreciated.

Check Out the Historical Marker Database

If you’re curious about historical markers already existing in our city, be sure to check out the Historical Marker Database. It’s a fantastic resource that offers many insights into the places that have already made their mark (pun intended!) on Chattanooga’s history.

So, gather your thoughts, submit your ideas, and let’s celebrate our city’s hidden gems together. Let’s help put Chattanooga on the map — one historical marker at a time!
