The lovely city of Chattanooga has lost one of its remarkable residents, 101-year-old Dorothy Parker White, who peacefully passed away on Sunday, December 22, 2024, at her home. Dorothy was not just any local, but a cherished member of the community who spent her entire life in the Chattanooga area.
After dedicating an impressive 40 years of her life to Bellsouth/AT&T, Dorothy retired to enjoy her golden years. Her career was a testament to her commitment and dedication, qualities that defined her both professionally and personally. For many, she was a beacon of inspiration and strength.
As a devoted member of the First Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Dorothy brought joy to many by singing in the church choir. Her voice was a source of comfort and a celebration of faith shared with her fellow congregation members. This was just one of the many ways she engaged with her community, always seeking to connect and spread joy.
In addition to her church involvement, Dorothy actively participated in various local organizations. She was a proud member of the Scenic City Friends, the C.P.W. Sunshine Club, and the Pioneers of Telephone Company, which is a retiree club. Each of these groups played a role in nurturing her spirit and passion for community engagement. It was through her participation in these organizations that Dorothy built lasting friendships and connections.
Dorothy felt deeply the loss of loved ones throughout her life. She was preceded in death by her husband, Randolph L. White, as well as her parents, Ernest and Athene Parker, her son, Larry White, and her sister, Mary Katherine Saylors. However, Dorothy’s legacy continues through her loving family. She is survived by her son, Lamar (Rita Wirth) White, along with two daughters-in-law, Janice White and Carolyn White. Her family also includes two cherished grandchildren, Brooke (Richard) Henderson and Shawn Ellison, and three adorable great-grandchildren: Heath Henderson, Sadie Henderson, and Gracie Ellison.
The community will gather to honor Dorothy’s life during funeral services scheduled for 3:00 PM on Sunday, December 29, 2024, at the First Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Chattanooga. The service will be officiated by Dr. R. Courtney Krueger. Visitation will take place from 1 PM to 3 PM at the church, allowing friends and family to share their memories and celebrate a life well-lived.
Following the service, Dorothy will be interred at Chattanooga National Cemetery at 1:00 PM on Monday, December 30, 2024. The family invites everyone to join them in reflecting on the beautiful memories they shared with Dorothy.
In an admirable gesture, Dorothy’s family has requested that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Caldsted Foundation or to the First Cumberland Presbyterian Church. This request highlights the values of giving and community service that Dorothy embodied throughout her lifetime.
The family has expressed their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Caldsted Independent Living Community for their dedicated care and support during Dorothy’s time there. Their compassion and kindness were deeply appreciated by both Dorothy and her family.
Arrangements for Dorothy’s memorial services are in the capable hands of Heritage Funeral Home, East Brainerd Chapel. As the community reflects on her impressive life, many will undoubtedly hold close the sweet memories of a woman who truly left a mark on the hearts of those around her.
