Chattanooga is in mourning as it bids farewell to two cherished members of the community, Eva Jo Catherine Mason Smith and Violet Larrabee. Both women lived rich and fulfilling lives that touched the hearts of many.
Eva Jo Smith, a remarkable 99-year-old resident of Chattanooga, passed away peacefully on November 9, 2024, at The Lantern, where she had spent her recent years. Known for her vibrant spirit and unwavering faith, Eva Jo lived a life marked by deep connections and steadfast dedication to her family and community.
Born in Chattanooga, Eva Jo’s early childhood was spent at Bonnie Oaks Orphanage, an experience that shaped her resilience and compassion. She later graduated from Tyner High School, where she met her future husband, M. Harold Smith. Their love story blossomed before his service in the Army-Air Force during World War II. After marrying, they built a home filled with joy while raising their three sons. Sadly, her husband passed away after more than 50 years of marriage, leaving a significant gap in her life.
As her children grew, so did Eva Jo’s passion for real estate. She began her career with Elgin Smith Realty, where she made quite an impression as an award-winning agent. Her dedication and hard work earned her a beloved spot in the hearts of her clients and colleagues alike.
A life member of the Hamilton County Republican Women, Eva Jo served two terms as president from 2004 to 2007 and was actively involved as a board member and committee participant. Through leadership roles, she made lasting contributions to her community and inspired many others to engage in civic duty.
Eva Jo’s unwavering faith was evident in her lifelong membership at First Cumberland Presbyterian Church, where she led with love and devotion. Her commitment to her church and community illustrated her strong character and deep-seated values.
Although she is predeceased by her beloved husband and youngest son, Andy, Eva Jo is survived by her two sons, Hal and Stephen, along with their spouses, six grandchildren, and an astounding 19 great-grandchildren, plus three great-great-grandchildren. Her family will surely carry on her legacy of love and service.
Graveside services are set to take place at Chattanooga National Cemetery on Thursday, November 14, at 10:30 a.m., providing friends and loved ones an opportunity to pay their final respects. Family and friends are invited to gather at the funeral home for a visitation on Wednesday evening, November 13, from 5-7 p.m.
Chattanooga also remembers the gentle spirit of Violet Larrabee, who passed away comfortably at home on November 6, 2024, at the age of 93. Born in Austin, Minnesota, on December 23, 1930, Violet was the daughter of Polish immigrants and embodied the warmth and resilience of her cultural roots.
Violet was well-known in her community, treasured for her love of gardening and family, who always found a warm welcome and an abundance of fresh flowers at her home. She shared her love widely and left a lasting impression on those fortunate enough to cross her path.
While her departure leaves a quiet space in Chattanooga, both Eva Jo and Violet will be remembered for their love, kindness, and commitment to those around them. Family members and friends reflect fondly on their lives and the indelible marks they left on the hearts of many.
Funeral arrangements for Violet are being handled by John P. Franklin Funeral Home, where family and friends are encouraged to express their condolences and support during this difficult time.
In these moments of loss, the Chattanooga community comes together, remembering the passions and contributions of these remarkable women, ensuring their legacies endure.
