Chattanooga Remembers a Local Legend: Michael Bernard Jones, Sr. “Chub Roc”

Chattanooga is in mourning as the community pays its respects to a beloved figure, Michael Bernard Jones, Sr., affectionately known as “Chub Roc.” Chub, who was 67 years old, passed away on October 30, 2024, in a local hospital, leaving behind a rich legacy of love, laughter, and delicious meals.

A Life Rich with Service and Flavor

Born on August 12, 1957, to Gloria Harris-Moorer and Kenneth Jones Sr., Chub was a proud graduate of Brainerd High School. Following his high school days, he felt the call to serve and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, where he proudly defended our country before receiving an honorable discharge. After his time in the military, Chub turned his passion for cooking and grilling into a thriving career, opening numerous restaurants throughout the Chattanooga area.

Family First

Chub was more than just a restaurant owner; he was a family man at heart. His love for his family knew no bounds, and he cherished every moment spent with them. Whether it was taking fun-filled trips, playing games, or simply enjoying a cold beer while listening to his favorite tunes, every minute was precious to him. His exceptional skill set reached beyond cooking; Chub was also talented in construction and building, a trait that was much admired by his loved ones.

A Legacy of Love

Chub’s family reflects a rich tapestry of lives touched by his warmth. He is survived by his mother, Gloria Moorer; devoted wife, LaFonda Witcher; and a proud father to sons Brandon, Michael Jr., Savon Sr., and Orlando Jones. He also leaves behind beloved daughters LaTasha Hart, Tia Fortson, Myonna Jones, and Arbranna Pollard. Furthermore, Chub welcomed stepchildren Eric and Adrian Hubbard, Everett and Evette Hicks, and Xavier Bickerstaff into his life.

The Jones family tree continues to grow with numerous grandchildren—an astounding 27 grandkids and remarkable 9 great-grandchildren. Chub leaves behind cherished memories not only for his immediate family but also for many close friends, including longtime buddies Stephanie Dozier, Victor Jackson, and Dathan Billingsley.

Final Farewell

For all those who would like to celebrate Chub’s incredible life, a public viewing is scheduled for Tuesday, November 12, from 9 AM to 11:30 AM at the John P. Franklin Funeral Home. Following the viewing, a heartfelt funeral service will begin at 11:30 AM, and Chub will be laid to rest at the Chattanooga National Cemetery at 1:30 PM.

Remembering Other Souls

While the community grieves for Chub Roc, it’s essential to note that other beloved community members have recently passed as well. Marjorie Allene Wiggins Grant, at age 90, and Margaret Byrd Lynch, aged 96, both made significant contributions to the fabric of Chattanooga. Howard Looney, too, will be remembered fondly after passing quietly at the age of 87.
