Gloria And Bill Hartshorn: A Chattanoogan Love Story for the Ages
On a clear day in July, the Chattanooga National Cemetery echoed with the sorrowful notes of a bugle playing “Taps” to bid farewell to the couple, Gloria and Bill Hartshorn, revered for their deep-rooted bond. They were blessed with three children, six grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. Their loved ones will remember them as people instilled with Christian faith, love, and friendships that lasted a lifetime.
The Couple’s Life and Legacy
Gloria Hartshorn, who was born on January 27, 1927, in New York City, passed away peacefully on June 30, 2023, at Alexian Village on Signal Mountain, Tennessee. Her husband, Bill Hartshorn, joined her in the afterlife a few months later on November 15, 2023, ending his centenary of service to God, his country, and to all who knew him.
The couple was admired for their solidarity and merriment that lasted an incredible 76 years of marriage. Born out of Gloria’s mother’s career in fashion design, Gloria’s love for artistry and elegance drove her accomplishments in painting, gardening, and crafts, and made her a homemaker adored by her friends and family.
Bill’s Heroic Past
Bill Hartshorn, who was born and raised in Kensington, Maryland, was a fighter pilot for the US Army Air Force during World War II. He served with the 56th Fighter Group, known as “Zemke’s Wolfpack”, the highest-scoring U.S. unit flying over Nazi-occupied Europe. He was shot down by enemy gunfire during Operation Market Garden in September 1944 which resulted in the Group’s highest losses during the war. After his recovery, Bill returned to America as a decorated veteran and met Gloria.
In 1947, Gloria and Bill tied the knot and became the proud parents to Beverly Ann, Sandra Lee, and William David. During the Korean War, Bill was called back into service and Gloria dedicated herself to raising their children throughout his absence. Following their reunion, they continued to raise a happy family whilst maintaining a strong presence in their community and social activities, Bill eventually going on to win the “Golden Ingot Award” for his work at Carpenter Steel.
Shared Faith and Spirituality
The shared spiritual life of Gloria and Bill played a vital role in shaping their identities. Their 50 years of involvement with the ministry of Ben Haden at Chattanooga’s First Presbyterian Church marked their deep reliance on their Christian Faith. They actively engaged in establishing a community of fellowship and left a lasting impact on their friends and congregation.
Remembering the immense love, grace, devotion, and commitment emanated by the couple, “HERE News” lauds the irreplaceable lives of Gloria and Bill Hartshorn. In honor of their memory, the family has requested donations be made to First Presbyterian Church, offering their community and admirers a chance to partake in their legacy.
